Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

R-Sys problem

i searched the forum but didnt see anything on this topic - pls forgive me if I missed something and this ends up being a repost....

Bought a set of R-Sys wheels about 500 miles ago. My front hub started making this strange noise and the bearing suddenly began loosening itself inside the forks while i was riding (turning counter-clockwise as if you were adjusting the hub with that tool Mavic provides). By the time I noticed something was up, the hub had about 1/8" of play in the forks vs. where it started.

Has anybody else heard of the R-Sys having some issues?

thanks - Jim

+1 - return them. I heard a story of someone having all of their nifty carbon spoke broken out during a love tap on a ride, but nothing about the bearings. Should be a fluke.

SHOULD be...

A guy at our local lbs had a similar problem with his r-sys front wheel. They got it sorted out though and it hasn't happened again.

I had a problem with the front hub on my R-SYS. When I took it apart, I could see that the compression ring inside was loose, and moving around as the wheel turned. As a consequence, the spokes would hammer the ring as they were loaded, making the noise. I don't believe I ever had any side-to-side play though. The noise was annoying, but then I broke some spokes and sent it back. The charged $60 for the spokes and fixed the hub for no charge.

The R-sys wheels seem grossly overpriced relative to what you get for a regular Kysyrium wheel. I believe I read somewhere that Mavic is going to ditch the carbon spokes for some other mystery material on this model.

Someone locally on a ride had the front skewer of the person behind go into her wheel and shatter all of the spokes. She had the wheel rebuilt but its never been the same since.

They had that problem with most of the first generation wheels. All the people that got them as beta testers had the same thing happen to them. Mavic knows about and shouldn't have a problem with a warranty.

The hub problem sux but to me these wheels are dangerous as when one spoke goes it can cause all of them to shatter. There's the crash post in the racing forum at Pace Bend, TX. Grahm Watson also has eerily similar pics of a rider in the Tour Down Under crashing with shattered spokes. This is a bad wheel design in my opinion (though I'm no engineer) and I think its downright dangerous.

good video review.

The comments about carbon spokes would be enough for me to steer clear of them. I agree with ravenmore's design and safety comments. What business does anybody have riding such dangerous wheels, especially recreational cyclists.

They also talk about the wind resistance created by the massive carbon spokes.

Don't they also use carbon spokes for charcoal drawings?

It doesn't help the OP, but for anyone else looking through this thread thinking of buying these wheels, let me just say that I would not buy them again. I'm not going to ditch the ones that I have, but I'm just glad that I didn't pay anywhere near full price for them...

But Bicycling Magazine and W*I*R*E*D Magazine speak very highly of them... you must have gotten a lemon.

CF spokes laced to a shallow rim -- what a great idea. I wonder why you don't see this sort of wheel design more often?

Carbon spokes can be done. Both Topolino and Lightweight are doing them and have been for years. Of course both blend in kevlar I think. Topolino's design is especially unusual as the spokes don't attach/terminate at the hub. They pass through it and terminate at the other side of the rim. Mavic's carbon spokes were a bad idea though.

Here's a pic of some Topolino AC29's I had a while back. THIS is how you do carbon spokes:

There was an ugly crash at Pace Bend Park this last weekend due to what looks like an R-Sys front wheel failing at 40+mph. I would get rid of these quick.

Lightweight wheels no longer use the Kevlar. But, with their new carbon layup, they are stiffer and stronger without it.
