Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Smokin eBay deal or what?

https://cgi.ebay.com/Cannondale-Super...QQcmdZViewItem

This bike sold for $4550, plus shipping. New 56c Cannondale Super Six with SRM. My LBS says this bike MSRP's for $9500. It would appear somebody got quite a deal.

Am I missing something here? Wasn't in the market, but that's why I haunt eBay when I am. But this bike wasn't slightly used, it was brand new. If it's real, it's a bargain. Or appears to be.

Discuss.

I saw an '06 Six13 (DA, Ksyrium ES's) on Craigslist for $1500 a few weeks ago. Too bad it wasn't my size.

I see that now. Problem is that it was listed as "Local pickup only". I think it wouldn't appear on many folk's radar that way.

So it would appear to be every bit the deal you had thought it was.

think about it, if you're going to put out for a new bike, how much would you pay to a guy with 63 transactions on ebay? is he going to give you a warranty? what if there were problems? I always find it odd that there are people with new high end products for sale on ebay...where did they get it? why did they get it. sure there are guys that win things in a race, bought it cheap when because they are on a team, etc...but don't expect them to offer a warranty.

ebay's a dangerous place, IMO. I've been burned twice, both by guys with mucho transactions and approval ratings in the high 90s. So I've given it up for the past couple of years.

I read an article last year about the scams (and software programs!) that generate high approval numbers. In addition, some guys are suing if you give them a bad rating. Either that, or they trash your reputation.

That's why I use craigslist. You can still get burned, but at least you can see, feel, and test the item, and walk away with it in your hand.

Similar to fogrider, if you have $5k to drop on a bike, wouldn't you feel more comfortable buying from an LBS? Also, and this is pure speculation, I suspect if you have that kind of money, you are not cruising ebay for deals, you would want a certain level of service.

For us fugal cyclists it shows that buying new, just like a car, is truely a waste of money. And for those paranoid out there, if you pay with a cc via paypal and anything goes bad, the cc company will pull money in a heartbeat for you, I know this firsthand.

You can fly there and pack it up yourself and you will still be ahead.

2 possibilities.

1) Hot bike and seller needs to get rid of it fast.
2) Your LBS is making huge margins on high end bikes.

two wrongs don't make a right...unless you were the buyer.

Don't know about this one but it often is what is not said in the listing that is most important.

Why can't sellers just tell the truth about a bike? Looking at a Calfee frame. Message the seller asking if he is the original owner, warranty cards, etc. Nothing in the listing that the seller is one of many owners. Not worth the asking price if the pedigree is unknown..

I would have established telephone contact with the seller, paid by Paypal with Amex. If the deal goes south there's some recourse. But once you establish a relationship with the seller, that doesn't happen. Warranty? If I'm saving $3500, I can pay for my own repairs, thank you. Not that big of a deal. Some risk, but minimal in my opinion.

I didn't do this deal, but I've done similar ones in the $1100-$2200 range with no problems. Depends on what your tolerance for this type of thing is, I spent years buying and selling $3K+ guitars on eBay, if you have some common sense about how to interview buyers/sellers, it's not hard to stay safe. 99%+ of eBayers are very honest. So the odds are certainly with you.
