Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saddle recommendation please!

My riding buddy sent me this email:

"As for pain, I think I have to find a new saddle. I’m experiencing numb nuts pretty bad and am not at all happy with that (mama isn’t either ;o) I’ve done a lot of research and ordered a newer saddle, but don’t know. I had this a bit last year before trying my Terry and that helped a bit, but I don’t remember anything like what I’m experiencing now. Have you ever run into this issue? What do you know that can be done – any ideas on saddles? I’m open to all ideas and really need to get this fixed, or long rides for me are out. I can’t suffer with this all season long – nope, can’t do it. When it’s a choice between the family jewels doing their job or riding, you know what wins, ehe. And I really love riding…"

Help me recommend a saddle for him. I thought i saw some contraption that measures sit bones, that would be his first step along with quality bibs/shorts. Correct?
Ideas?

i had my sit bone width assessed by sitting on a little strip of memory foam at a bike shop. it's not real scientific, but i ended up with a Specialized Avatar 155mm based on that measurement, and i have to say it's the most comfortable saddle i've ever had. might work for your buddy.

I did a quick forum search...several page hits off of "saddle recommendations."

The right saddle on a bike that is improperly fitted is a problem. Being fitted, utilizing a LBS with a liberal return policy, or both, might be in order.

FWIW, I have had great results with the Fizik Arione.

My vote is for the Specialized Toupe Team Saddle (non Gel version) - I love it (on the Merlin)

Numbness is often caused by incorrect saddle height, especially too high. Check that before wasting money on different saddles.

+3 for Specialized Body Geometry saddles. They are expensive but as a testament to their comfort, I have one on each of my bikes!

I had been using since 1999, Selle Italia Flite. I've tried other ones, including the Toupe.... The distant second choice is a San Marco. The flite just works for me. I have 2 kids since I've used them so...

This is my third Flite -- I got it used yesterday. Just plain carbon. It doesn't even have any padding but has proven itself already already on a 34 miler today I did not notice it at all.

The Bontrager in-forms should be in most LBSs by now. It's their answer to specialized BG, and if nothing else their measuring set-up seems way better than the specialized memory foam jobbie.

+5 on the Toupe, my wife absolutely loves hers.

SLR or Gel Flite will get me past 90 minutes on the trainer and everything is still functional.

As alway with saddles YMMV.

++ on Specialized BG saddles

I can't say enough about my Toupe(s). They have changed my riding completely. I had a fizik Arione which was fine for up to 3 hours, the Toupe is great for all day. I need an all day because I'm so slow!

(If you need a link to the sizing page on the Specialized site then PM me. They seem to have removed it but I have a link that works, unfortunately it's at home.)

If it's this serious, I would go with a saddle w/o a nose and benefit of extensive research on the topic.

And other incorrect riding positions. Bike fit is correct is the first question to ask.

Another Flite fan. I'm on my 4th.
