Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Finally got some distance on my Soul

Hello,

First of all, please accept my apologies for the crappy photos. I'm not much of a photographer and I had just busted my camera on a recent holiday. The attached snaps were taken using a camera phone.

Anyway, I picked-up a Soul Progeny a couple of weeks ago when I was in Singapore for a meeting. Built it up with some parts from a previous bike along with some second-hand wheels I bought recently.

This bike is a bit of a mongrel with 2004 Chorus (shifters, derailleurs and brakes), a compact FSA SL-K crankset, the stem and seatpost from a Felt F50 (which are perfectly decent), second-hand Campagnolo Record hubs laced to Mavic Open Pros. Things I bought for this build were a new pair of Look Keo Sprints, an Arione and the King headset. The fork is no-brand carbon which I picked-up from Soul.

I bought the wheelset for the equivalent of about 200 US dollars and immediately stripped the hubs and gave them a good cleaning. The Record hubs are of indeterminate vintage, but I reckon they could be as old as from 2001 or as new as from 2005. The bearings, cones etc were in very good condition and the rims needed just a little bit of truing. Being the OCP, I took some Lemon Pledge to the hubs and gave them a quick polish. They look, as least by my estimation, as good as new. Having some extra time I then polished the spokes which I think are, judging from the head stamps made, DT Swiss.

I've put in some distance on the bike and I must say that it rides pretty comfortably. Of course everyone with a titanium bike would say that, but I was actually quite surprised at how much I like this bike. In fact this is becoming more and more my 'main' ride. The only thing that took some getting used to is the weight- this is all straight gauge tubing and not the lightest build. But then again, neither am I.

Take a look:
