I have a 1999 Biachi Campione which was my first road bike and for years it's never felt right but I just kept on riding. It's a 55cm frame (center to top) and after getting measured I should be on a 52cm bike, so I'm wondering if it's worth shortening the stem (I feel over extended) and trying to make the necessary adjustments to finally be comfortable on it or just getting a new bike. In the years I've ridden it most of my rides were short commutes but now that I'm riding 50-60 miles the discomfort is much more noticeable. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I've tried the 'make-too-big-bike-fit' thing before, and it never really worked. Yeah, you can decrease the stem, but you still have a head tube higher than what you need. And if you scoot your seat forward, you change your position relative to the bottom bracket (which is bad).
In the end, I gave in and bought a new frame. Best decision I made. And if this can be your excuse to buy a new road bike, then so be it.
