I would guess they allow you to get the fit you want. You can have the bars set so that rinding on the hoods keeps you low without the drops being stupid low.

My buddies Giant just came with these stock... He switched to some newtons because he said he couldn't get the right comfort level on the compacts.

Im sure its simply for weight savings.

I just switched to FSA Wing Pro Compact Alloy bars and couldn't be happier.....after being a primarily hoods rider I am now spending more time in the drops than ever....tops and hoods are nice, meaty, & comfy too !

    Here's a good article:

I also have the FSA Wing Pro Compact Bar... I switched over from the Deda Newton Shallow. The FSA is amazingly comfortable, and I feel like I have the ability to use the whole bar. With the Newton, I had one precise area that felt good. The FSA feels great on the hoods, anywhere along the drops, and even on the tops. I like the flat area on the tops because I can rest my hands there during extended climbs or recovery without having to "grab" the bar. My palms just rest there perfectly. The drops are shaped such that with small hands like mine, I can utilize many different positions. I switched based solely on comfort, and it was a great move.

+1 I have the same bars and am now able to ride in the drops comfortably. The flat tops are nice also,my right hand no longer goes numb.
