Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Compact chainrings on Dura Ace?

Can I simply swap out the 53/38 rings on my 2005 Dura Ace crankset to 50/34 rings and make it compact gearing? I realize I'll have to lower the front derailluer.

It's just a marketing catch.

Thanks. Aren't there chainrings in other tooth configurations that will fit?

this is why you need a Zipp Vuma Quad. Compact BCD, but also availabe with standard size rings. So you can n run 53/39 or 50/34 on the same crank. Dual functionality to offset the slightly higher price.

True, but I'm sure they are not as stiff as the Zipps (afterall Zipp says their 53 on the Vuma Quad is as stiff as a standard crank.). It could be a safety issue to flex a 53 ring on a 110 bolt circle, and drop the chain in the middle of a sprint. I wouldn't risk it. You need the Zipps.

Even if you do change and fit the chain rings - it's not all the things you'll have to do. You'll also possibly have to readjust your chain length.

I'm pretty sure the smallest chainrings you can get with a 130 is 38t, certainly you can find 50t chainrings. However, if you want something more climbing friendly you're probably out of luck and will need a new crank.

With the newer two piece compact cranksets, you'll have to remove that 2005 DA bottom bracket (BB) and replace with an external BB cup set. Some compact cranksets also include an external BB cup set.

Some 50/34's will allow you to change out 34 for a 36 chainring.

D/A are 130 BCD and compats are 110.
Doubt you have a 38/ 53 . 39/53 is the norm. If by chance that is a 38 it more than likely is not a D/A.
I've been trying to find a couple for the timing chain of my tandem but have been told Shimano doen't make them.

1) There's no such thing as a one-piece crankset. You probably meant two-piece: the drive-side with integrated spindle, and the NDS crankarm.
2) There are 3-piece compact cranksets (DS crankarm, NDS crankarm, cartridge BB w/spindle) that are compatible with Octalink-splined bottom brackets. You needn't purchase a new BB just to go compact.

If "these" refers to the chainrings in my link, you're wrong.

If "these" refers to your cranks, then you need to work on your article usage.
