Campy front derailleur question
Do I need a modern Campy front derailleur? My Mondonico is getting built with 2006 Veloce brifters, has a 2006 Record crankset, a Chorus ultra-narrow chain. The plan so far is to use my old C-record front derailleur. However, is there any real benefit or need to get with the current Campy generation and buy a modern front changer? Will I be fine with teh C-record?

I'd say as long as your old derailluer moves the chain back and forth between the two chainrings while riding the bike there's no reason to update it. If you need to update it a Centaur front derailluer can be had quite cheap on ebay.

With Campy Ergo, as long as the derailleur moves, you don't need anything special. Their front shifters aren't indexed to the chainring positions in the way that SRAM and Shimano's are. Instead, think of them more as "indexed friction" shifters. Each click moves the derailleur a certain amount, and several clicks are required to shift the chain from one ring to the other.
Actually, my information is a bit old. The Campy Ergos that I have are from '99 or 2000. The more modern 2006 brifters might now be indexed to the chainrings. I don't think they are, but I don't know for sure.

2007 - 2008 Campy introduced QS (Quick Shift) for its front deraileur and shifters. The pivot ratio is different so it shifts quicker. Although a new FD will work with your 2006 brifter, it will not provide full advantage of the new technology unless you change out your brifter as well. I would stay with your old FD.
However, if you REALLY want a new Record FD, I have a new 2008 Record w/ 32mm clamp I can sell you.

The 2008 Campy FDs are compatable with both standard and compact cranks. This is the difference in them from the 2007 design when they had separate FDs for compact and standard cranks.

The leverage ratios of QS Front Shifters and Front Deraileurs are increased so it pulls more cable. It will work, but you will not get the full QS benefit unless you have both.
