Strange Chain Incident today while riding
So I'm out on a very easy ride today since my legs are a bit heavy and I have a stage race next weeekend, and out of the blue my chain starts "hoping." I figure since I had changed wheels prior to heading out on a ride I just needed a quick adjustment. I played around with the rear Derailleur to no avail so I stopped and flipped the bike over and realized I had a link fused that wasn't moving and it was causing the chain to hop every time around. No matter what I did I could not loosen it up. Weird thing is I didn't notice anything unusual prior. Nothing at all. NO crashes or mishaps either. The chain is a record and only had 17 to 1800 miles. I've put over 3500 on a chain in the past with no problems at all! What do you think?

Yep. Definately need a new one. I'm just surprised it happened and trying to figure out why.

The shop put it on for me so I hope they did. It's been fine all these miles then took a dump.

a stuck link that's not easily freed could mean it's bent. ergo, new chain time.

Ask them. I put mine on with standard chain tool and it has made it to about 500 mi just fine but I'd like to know what I have in store for my wrenching transgressions. Maybe this is why they say you need the HD link and special tool (other than selling another $125 of stuff).

Try working / bending the chain side to side at the point of the stiff link.

Could be a tight link. Could also be the pawls in your freehub wore out. That happened to a friend on a ride and it was weird. Her chain jumped wildly whenever she stopped peddling.
BTW, bending a 10-speed chain can be a bad thing.

Everything on the bike was brand new 17 or 1800 miles ago so maybe. I'm guessing the link was probably pressed wrong when they did the chain originally. I've only put on one Campy chain and in was a PITA so now I have the shop do it. I didn't want to buy the $100.00 chain tool.

A KMC or Veloce chain will work just as well, and won't suck so much to replace. I like KMCs as they have the master link.

Went with a KMC. So far it seems to shift as well as the Record versions I've been using.
