Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do your knees creak?

If you take your pants off (woo) and move your foot up and down, do your knees creak?

Yes, of course, it's all a part of getting old. Some days, everything aches.

The knees have been creaking since I was six. No pain involved.
My right ankle started at about 27 after a high ankle sprain.
I can do neck/back, wrists, toes.

Some of us are stealthier than others.

Yes, they make noise. So does my anus.

I only really notice it during review time at work.

Both my knees make a ton of noise, but my knees are shot. Years of being slightly (and not so slightly) overweight and years of playing catcher in competitive baseball leagues has caused it. I have slight tears in both of my ACLs, and some mornings I can't bend my knee straight without being in a lot of pain.

First off, creaks don't count until the other people around you comment on them, and I'm not talking about joints cracking, I mean creaking like a hinge. My knees don't do that, but my fingers do on occasion and yes, they do hurt when they do that (climbing).

I guess I'm just wondering if creaky knees = knee problems which from what the poll is saying, doesn't seem to be the case.

My right knee creaks/pops a little. I had it checked out, and the doc saidit was in excellent shape. Only thing was a little point of bone growth on the inside of the inside lower bone. He said it was nothing to worry about.
Seems to work ok for a 35 year old knee.

Knees started getting that crunching snow feeling when I was 14-15 years old. Only realized this after reading about John Howard's chlondromalacia (sp?).

I've always been paranoid of my knees, take it easy if I feel any pain. But even after really long rides (5-7 hours) my knees are good the next day. When I ramp up the hours a lot they get a bit achy sometimes for the first 30 min on the bike but once I'm warmed up I'm good.

I don't lift heavy weights with my legs because that makes my knees hurt.

My experience has been similar to this. Also I played soccer for 10 years as a kid.

So I have to ask. Is it your Knees or your anus that you notice at review time at work?

Yes, it can mean knee problems ... especially if it sounds & feels like you've got gravel in there. But not necessarily. If you're concerned, pay a little visit to your local sports clinic and see what they say.

My knees occasionally pop when I bend them sharply, or unbend them from a sharply bent position. No knee pain whatsoever on my bike though, or anywhere else for that matter, at least not currently.

I did go through a year where I had significant knee pain on the bike, after I started to push myself to higher gearing to build strength. Turns out that my seat was too low. It didn't make a difference when I was pushing smaller gears, but as I got stronger and applied more force to the drivetrain, my knees started feeling the maladjustment. When I fixed the saddle position, made it higher, the knee pain went away never to return. This was 4 or 5 years ago.

Interesting.... I'm in 5% of the group that reported no noise, but knee problems. Of course, knee problems have quite a range of symptoms.

I can't jog, much less run any distance more than 100 yards without my knees hurting like heck the next day. I can't go snow boarding and sit on a lift chair with the board without major knee pain the next day. BUT, I can ride 100 miles at a decent clip and walk fine the next day. Well, the quads hurt a bit then. But that's a good hurt.
