Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You don't have to go with a Shimano 600 - just find a 38t road chainring (not track) in 130 BCD and it basically should work fine. I don't think 1990 Shimano 600 had shifting ramps, unless I'm mistaken, so it should be ok.

It is unlikely to be found as a stocked item, but is easily ordered at your request.

Here is a 39. Don't know how it wears but it will fit and it's hard to beat the price.
