Why can't I get my bike up to 52mph on the trainer?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Try reducing the tension to zero (not touching the rear wheel at all). Then all ya need is a 147 cadence (in a 52/12)!

I've had mine over 40 on rollers. 53? I dont think my legs spin that fast. 43 is no sweat on the road. Theres a nice hill near the house that works just fine for speed runs.

Knucklehead, you need to elevate the trainer so the bike is pointing downhill.

Just what I was thinking. I dont see why this is so special. Other than that my old trainer would probably explode if I went over 35.

Turn the speed of the fan you use to cool yourself down, it's giving you too much wind resistance.

I've hit 56.2mph on rollers on a 47x13 gearing which is just over 198 rpms. But not for very long.

I have heard of people having their sweat glands removed but have never actually met one.

Of course... you may be talking in metric (which I understand).

43 kmh is no sweat but 70 kmh (43 mph) takes a little more effort.

I have a feeling she's one of those people you might bump into in the line at the grocery store and for some reason they feel like they have to tell you their complete life story.

Oh... my best flat ground speed of late has been 55kmh / 35 mph on my touring bike and I am gunning for 60kmh / 38 mph (on a different bike).

I figure my downhill speed will improve now that I am pushing a higher gear.

I will have to see how fast I can spin the trainer when I am in the gym tomorrow.

53 on the trainer?!?
I just set a speed record for myself yesterday and that was 51.7 mph DOWNHILL.
50x11 and ran out of gears. [it's a steep hill.]

59.3 mph. 183 rpm on a cycleops mag trainer set to the lowest tension.
My personal best rpm is 198 rpm same setting, speed unknown.

+1! Glad somebody else said it. I was gonna say "set the cyclometer wrong" but didn't want to hog the smart-alec responses.
