This is the first time I remember getting the database errors since I joined. The site does go down from time to time, but this is the first database error problem I've seen anyway.
A quick refresh and the page comes up. What's the big deal?

So you rarely ever post here because there are database errors occasionally? Your loss I guess. I get enough out of the site (entertainment and information) that I can deal with the bad along with all of the good that I get.

For a large company, you would think they know to test new releases before going live. There's no excuse for the way this site is performing now

+1 on new release, but that might be vendor driven, not their choice. But, as my old boss used to point out, the last test environment is when you go live.
I don't know databases but it's probably a standard error. Not sure if it's an in-memory database, written-to-drive, etc., how much memory there is, reboot frequency of server, CPU, redundant hardware, link speed/reliability, etc etc etc.
As someone that helped maintain servers and proprietary software that enabled one of the biggest financial companies in the US make about 40% of their income, I got familiar with how important it is to have good infrastructure. Good does not mean "expensive", just "smartly used". Our portion got by with perhaps $500k in extremely efficiently used servers (we basically used an array of inexpensive servers, kind of like using 105 in the pro peloton).
Also, although this is kind of sad, I'm on BF all the time. The DB errors seem to take place when it's busiest, i.e. Sunday evenings, some other evenings. I don't know if the email updates have anything to do with it but I get a lot of "thread update" emails and I can't get in consistently at about that time.

what seems to be the most frustrating is that there is a functioning server/db pair (the link to my explanation is above this post), but the obviously incompetent or overworked (or just plain unconcerned) team at the webhost this site runs on hasn't made the (very) simple fix of taking the affected server out of the 67.201.16.88 pool until the db issue is resolved. .77 works, the bad server doesn't. the reason why is sorta irrelevant, as bikeforums is losing revenue from ads due to a simple textbook change that hasn't yet been made.
