Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bag Balm

After reading a few positive posts, I decided to give Bag Balm a try. While in line yesterday at the local drugstore, a thought struck me: Do you think that somewhere out there, there's a cow in a cyclin' shop purchasing a tube of Chamois Butt'r, because she heard that it's good for chaffed teats & udders?

I thought Bag Balm was originally for animals? I heard from someone that you could get Bag Balm at Petco.

Only problem is the stuff gets everywhere and is a pain to get out of the chamois....Not to mention the saddle ends up feeling quite icky after a long ride....Yes I said icky!

True. Stay away from anything that's greasy or petroleum-based. It'll muck up your shorts, stain your saddle, etc. Bag Balm is great stuff, just not as a chamois cream.

Wasn't there a Far Side cartoon about that

I like Bag Balm it's saved my asss on more then one occasion. You don't need to use a whole lot of it such that it gets all over your saddle.

I can't speak from personal experience, because I haven't used it yet ( I'm giving my saddle sores a few more days to heal up, before I hit the road ) From what I've read so far, the problems from stained saddles, and shorts comes from using waaaaay too much! I wouldn't apply it directly to the chamois, anyway.

I use Bag Balm on all my long rides. You don’t need to use ½ the can every time you put it on. I apply it to me, sparingly, and not my shorts. I haven’t had any problems with it mucking up my shorts or staining my saddle.

I guess I must be using too much then....I'll try and tone it down...

I actually stopped using it this past winter since I was only on the trainer for 60 minutes at a time, but I think I might start up again now that that b!tch mother nature has smartened up and actually allowed spring to arrive...

The big problem with bag balm is it melts if left in a hot car, runs out of the can and makes an incredible mess. Someone suggested Eucerin to me and so far I've been pretty happy with it.

Not the whole can! Just a dab will do.

Are you that same guy that uses the whole bottle of Aqua Velva???
