Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

UA sleeveless heat gear works well for me. I mainly use it to prevent chaffing of the nips from the bibs.

I'll be wearing mine until I can't stand them any more (cheap Champion brand from Target). At what temperature do you people put yours away?

I really like to wear an under armour if it's just a little cool. I keeps me from getting chilled. But when it gets really hot, just a jersey.

I have a Voler sleeveless b.l. I like it, and the price was right. I also have some cheap triathlon tanktops (Hind? DeSoto?) that work well too.

For me it depends more on the humidity, but typically if it's 85-90 at the start of my race/ride and high humidity, I'm not wearing them.

BTW, the cheap UA type from walmart/target work just as well. I have the real deal and cheap ones I use when it's cooler, can't tell the difference.

What's the point of a base layer on an average summer ride? If the temps are above 70, why would you want two layers on?

I have a fishnet ( Craft?) coolmax that I wear when its exceptionally hot.
I've worn it at HHH when the temps have climbed into the upper 90's (and higher)
without any complaints. High humidity doesn't seem to bother me as much as
the U/A (and copies) with the fishnet.

Summer is a relative term in San Francisco. I've been happy with Craft but if venturing over to Marin County as well I will use the lighter weight smooth base layer from REI.

I've got a few giordana sleeveless that I wear all summer long. When it's time to retire them I'm going to try some craft base layers as I hear good things about them.

Better evaporative cooling - the base layer, esp. if it's close-fitting, wicks moisture away from your body and transfers it to your jersey, where it evaporates. I almost always wear a base layer, even on very hot days, and find it to be more comfortable.

I was surprised the first time I saw guys in the Tour de France wearing base layers on those really hot stages in the South of France, but I figures they must be on to something - turns out, they are!

Under, for the obvious nipplish reasons. But also I'd think it'd ride up if you had it over the bibs.

Over, because the base layer tends to be slippery and the straps wanta slide off.
