what's in your stable?
How many and what type of bikes are in a good, healthy stable? We're talking road bikes, so I don't want to hear about with hard-tails, full-suspension, and single spead mountain bikes I'm not looking for specific models, more what specific role does each bike serve.
My goal:
1. carbon racing bike -- races and fast training rides
2. training road bike -- for routine training, either carbon or high-end al
3. utility bike -- either an old road bike or hybrid for crusing town/errands
4. track bike -- mid-level track bike for velodrome training and racing
5. cross bike
What other reasons (i.e. excuses) can you use to justify buying more bikes?
Right now I have #1 and #2. I'm poor...

I guess the real question is: Why do you need all those bikes?
I once heard an old saying from a very wise man and I think it applies here:
"Beward the man who owns only one gun. For chances are, he knows how to use it."
Just exchange "gun" for "bike" and you've got it. All you really need is one. Just ride the hell out of it.
I say this because I have all of the bikes you listed. But I only ride one of them anymore.

Carbon road bike (Ridley Helium with D/A)
Scandium cross bike (Salsa Las Cruces w/Ultegra 10)
Alu hardtail 29er mtb (Motobecane w/LX & XT mix)
Really don't need anything else...each bike fades into the other's territory from the top down.
The Ridley is the road bike. The Salsa is the cross/bad weather/night ride road bike and gets used for light trail work. The 29er is the trail/townie.

True, but the number of recreational road riders that frequent velodromes or ride in cross races are in the minority.
Like I said, I have a track bike and a cross bike. But I only ride the road bike anymore.

A steel cyclocross bike (Steelman) set up for racing (also used for fast road training rides).
A steel cyclocross bike (IRO) set up as a singlespeed/fixed gear race bike (also acts as my pit bike).
A steel cyclocross (Surly) bike set up as a touring/road bike.
I also have full time access to a steel track bike I use for track racing. All of my bikes have cantilever brakes, or none at all.

Sometimes one type of gun isn't enough. Same thing with bikes. Outside of the cross and track bikes (that I don't actually own), I will amass my stable by buying a new bike once every 3-5 years and moving everything down on the pecking order.

Two road bikes, one of which I may sell because I'm somewhat of a minimalist (n+1 doesn't apply to me ).
- Cervélo R3
- Lynskey R320
FG/SS set up for cross/trail riding
-IRO BFSSFG

What if you want to hunt deer? What if you want to be a cowboy in the wild west? What if you want to storm a government building in the middle of a giant computer fantasy world while wearing lots of leather?

Just saying.

Recreational/group ride/training ride/crit bike.
Commuter/beater.
Would like a dedicated racing bike, but I'm too cheap. Might build up a Leader or similar.

I have my Cervelo Eyre with Campy Daytona. I put aero bars and Shimano bar ends in friction mode and flip the seatpost for triathalons. It's already had the crap beat out of it, so it's the training and crit bike, too. '80 Centurion LeMans for centuries, crappy roads and dirt trails.
That's the stable until the 29'er comes, and my wife's already planning to kill me in my sleep over that one.

1) steel ciocc com 12.5 w/ campy centaur - my "fast" bike
2) steel 1980's miyata 312 - this is my fully-fendered commute/brevet bike. dynohub, carradice bag, down-tube friction shifters, the works. kind of heavy but a solid ride, even with the original (shimano Exage) brakes & front-derailleur!

I just have a couple of road bikes and a rigid mountain bike that I've put slick tires on. One of the road bikes stays on my KK trainer during the winter. I use the mountain bike to scout new routes or when I want to ride routes that have dirt, gravel, or bad pavement. Have a titanium road bike coming from BD this spring. Haven't decided yet if I'm going to keep both my other road bikes or not.

What if you like blonds? What if you like brunettes? What if you like redheads?
I say. Keep at least one of each in your stable.
