Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Steel v. Titanium

I currently ride a 2001 Guru Roubaix Steel Frame (Colombus Zona Asymetric Double Butted Tubes, Reynolds Ouzo Pro fork, Ultegra (9speed) components, Ritchey stem, headset and handelbars, which has approximately 8000 Km). I have a chance to buy a 2003 Lemond Victoire Titanium (Reynolds Seamless 3/2.5 Titanium). The components are roughly the same so the real difference is the frame material. At 200 pounds I do not really care about the weight. I love the smooth ride of my steel Guru and the frame has no problems whatsoever. My only real question is whether the titanium Lemond would ride smoother and would it be worth it. The price is between $2000.00 and $3000.00

I doubt you'll get a smoother ride just because it's titanium.

It's all in the design, not the material.

Does sound high... for that much dough you have your choice of hundreds of brand new bikes. Bikes you can test ride.

Test ride a bunch.

Buy the one you love.

I like steel. The ti bikes I have ridden didn't seem worth the extra money (IMHO). I'm 100% sure there are some that would blow my hair back... I just haven't found one yet. My current race bike is steel, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Then why even consider the Lemond? Sounds like you've got a setup that fits you well and you're dialed into, why mess with a great thing?

Ti and steel bikes can be designed to have the exact same ride characteristics. However, for the same frame strength, the Ti bike will weigh less and be more expensive.

Ain't no rule that says you can't buy the new bike and keep your old bike too.

Maybe look into one of the Bob Jackson "off the peg" steel frames.
