Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dog ate my team kit

#$@%^ h3ll. I hear my dog chewing on something last night which I know now from experience never ends well. This time the little **** had my brand new (as in 3 or 4 rides) Giordana team shorts on the sofa and was quite efficiently ripping the chamois out. I have no idea how he even got a hold of them. To add insult to injury when I started screaming at him he got scared and ran through the house pee'ing. Hmmph - wonder if you can make a chamois outta pit bull backside...

oh it brings back memories, my dog chewed up two pairs of sunglasses, three pairs of gloves, half dozen cds as well as two wallets. He is two years old and I still have to watch everything with a spongy or squishy feeling to it.

A month or so ago the little b@stard chewed a $60 pair of sandals, a $225 pair of prescription eye glasses, and then dug a HOLE in my mattress.

I've since learned a.) he only goes for items that cost $50 or more. Not sure how he figures this out but he is flawless in his execution and b.) if I want to keep anything important I have to put it out of Harley reach. I thought the bibs were but obviously he's learned some new tricks...

Oh man that sucks! Sometimes I'm quite glad I don't have a dog. Got bitten by one while riding the other day too!

From what I understand, dogs love things that smell like gifts from the "alpha dog" which would explain the gloves and wallet type stuff. We had a german shepherd a few years back and managed to get her to leave stuff alone by soaking rawhide chew toys in water, freezing them, and then giving them to her. She loved those. Good luck with the four-pawed shredding machine.

I once had a mouse eat a hole through my jersey to chew on a clif bar. Not as bad as that though.

My dog has a thing for paper products. Everything else she has outgrown (the shoes, pens, couch, sunglasses.....)

We used to have Gerbils. They'd get out occasionally, and almost always find some laundry to chew through.

Lucky for me, my Rhodesian just decides that any laundry left out is a good bed. He does eat trash from the bathroom, though.

Haha, I'm so glad my dog has started to taper off his "Destroy Clifton's stuff" habit. And he's been pretty good about going after cheap stuff. And of course now that I've said that I'll get home and he'll have chewed apart my chacos and my laptop. He still likes to get into the garbage if I don't "prep" it, first. A good recommendation for curbing your dogs chewing habits: Leave stuff out that you know he'll chew up, but spray it down with a mix of water and habenero hot sauce first. Also leave out rawhide toys and other real chew toys. Pits have a high pain tolerance, so it might not work as well with him as it does with a lot of dogs, but it usually works pretty well. They get the hang of what is ok to chew up and what is not pretty fast, even if they're stupid like my dog.

Tried the hot sauce thing. He likes it. And putting hot sauce on my chamois has potentially painful ramifications for me...

Pshaw! This is nothing. I'll bet half the people who have a pet worthy of being called a dog probably see $20K in damage to the house and its contents. Bored dogs are the worst chewers. They need lots of attention.

Maybe your dog is a reincarnated MTB'r and just does not like lycra. Has he ever chewed up any baggy shorts?

We used to have dogs in the house. The eviction notice came when one of them decided to dig his way through a hallway door that was closed to keep them out of the back rooms. Their rap sheet was quite long preceding that incident. They now live in the garage with their own doggie door. Much better - they still think they're indoor dogs and can come and go as they please. They can even take a 5hit in there on occasion and I don't care.

Had a white german shepherd that ate everything when she was young. Wicker baskets, CD's, plastic bowls (including her own food bowl), frisbees, firewood, magazines, books, and would even go in the pantry and remove canned food from the shelf, chew the can open and then eat the contents..... lasted until she was about 2 years old. After she "settled down" became best dog in the world.......

good luck.

it's either time to get rid of the dog, or start spending more time with it.

No, so I'm not ruling out this theory. I could test the theory though by going out and buying some baggy shorts that are $50 or more.

I am a new dog owner (just got a house so I figured now that I have the space I could get a dog), so I'm learning here. If I'm not working or riding I'm at home though and the dogs are with me. Shoot they even sleep with me at night. Not sure how I could spend more time with them?

Same here. Whenever something goes missing, I look in the dog's bed. Found my cellphone in there the other day. The leather holster was all chewed up. GOOD BOY!
