Garmin Edge /Motion based question about logging rides you did without the Garmin.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin Edge /Motion based question about logging rides you did without the Garmin.

Sorry about the long title, I tried to be as descriptive as possible.

I'm using the Garmin Edge and Motionbased to keep my log for this season.

I also keep a bike at work so on days like today I can get out and ride even if I brought the car to work. The work bike has a pretty basic Cateye computer.

How can I manually import my speed/time/distance to motionbased to keep a complete log of all my rides?

If it is not possible, what do you guys do with similar situations?

Best option is to get a second mount for your Garmin and just keep your Edge with you.

Other option would be to take your average speed and manually create a track of your ride on, say, Bike Route Toaster. Download the GPX from their site and upload it to MotionBased.

it is not possible. i upload to MB because i think it is neat. for training i keep a log that i can enter all my workouts into. no uploading from the garmin, but i can track everything from rides, to runs, to swims, to shoe mileage. my log is linked below. later.

You can't manually import rides intoMotionBased, whihc is part of the reason why it bites. GarminCon nect is supposed to be better, but who knows. MB has alienated a lot of people.

I use SportTracks on my local machine as my full log, and only upload selected rides to motionbased (see link in my sig). You can manually enter rides in SportTracks, which I've had to do ocassionally if I forget to turn the unit on or it runs out of power. But as someone else said, just get a second mount for your other bike. Note that you do not need to have the speed/cadence sensor for it to work properly...

for those that recommend a second mount, that would require taking the Garmin with me to work every day, not a great solution. The second bike is a mountain bike with slicks that I keep in my warehouse. If it's decent outside and I can get away from my desk for 30 minutes, I go ride. Definitely not worth dragging the GPS to work every day in case I might ride.

Is there a better solution than MB?

This is relatively new to me.

Dragging it with you? It doesn't even weigh a pound... Just throw it in your gym bag or backpack or briefcase or whatever you bring to work with you. The unit comes with 2 mounts so you don't even need to buy another one. And the mount's orientation can be changed, many people think its one stem mount and one bar mount, but its really two mounts that can be used either way and that's just how they set them up.

What I have done a few times when I forgot my Garmin on my second bike is export my ride from a previous day that has a similar route, edit the .tcx file to change the date and time, and then import the edited file back into Training Center.

It worked well.
