Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike buying quandry

There is a bike I want (duh).

All the colors that are available are cool, but my first choice of color cannot be had until late May at the absolute earliest (manufacturing issues). I have been also quoted July as a time frame.

My number 2 choice? Well, I can have that bike today. Just a mere 3.5 hour drive. One way.

This is a time trial bike and my main time trials are: Ohio state TT in late June, Masters Nationals in late June and the independent nationals in August. Not knowing an exact date, chances are high that I may not be able to even get the bike prior to the June races. I certainly won't have enough saddle time.

What would you do?

Since you have a strong chance of missing out on getting the bike before your TT and even if you do get it you will have very little time in the saddle, I would buy now. Unless you are really in love with that color and already have a nice TT bike.

They're having manufacturing issues with the color? Odd....

If you're serious about racing, get your second choice now....

No - what is going on is that bike #2 was ordered a long time ago and made early delivery to the shop. Any new orders of any color is delayed due to demand. The manufacturing issue (as I'm told) is that demand FAR outweighed supply.

All the more reason to buy now if you really need a TT bike. You have no guarantee when you will get the bike and it is in high demand.
