Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've never rolled a tire with Conti or Mastik One. I don't have any rolling resistance data, though (I don't think anybody does.)

My question was geared more towards strength and ease of use (neatness). I don't know if any one brand may clean up easier than another.

if you want ease of use go with Tufo Extreme tape. I went from Conti glue to using Tufo tape and have had no issues. As for rolling resistance its all bull****. I could tell no difference. Dont' where sox when riding, = less resistance ( sore feet I'm sure.

I've used teh Tape on @ set of Zipps , one sets of Reynolds, and a set of Mavic Kysrium ES - not a problem ever and I'm rolling with in 10 minutes, of install time.

Conti or Vittoria. Six of one...

DO NOT USE TUFO TAPE OR I WILL DRIVE UP THERE AND TAKE YOUR ZIPPS!

Oh, and there better be some Vittoria Corsa CX tubs going on them...

No tape and not because of the more rolling resistance BS. I just want to learn the art of gluing. Something about it just being the "right" way to do it.
I will keep the Zipp Tangente tires on the wheels until I flat or they wear out. I have a new Conti Sprinter Black Chilli as a spare so they will probably be my next set of tires.

Last time I glued a tub on, about 20 years ago, i used Dunlop rim cement !

use tape now but only on my best wheels, mostly use clincers.

Hutchinson but once you open it better use it all because it is not good the second time around (within the 48 hours that some recommend for tubular gluing time). The reason I like Hutchinson is it is not concrete like Conti. and when you glue too good, you will suffer when you have to remove the tire while in the middle of the road.

Okay, I'm good with that tire choice...

I tried to get those tires for my race this weekend. They didn't come in time and I got a second set of Corsa KSs instead. Let me know how they are. Good luck gluing....my first job was bad enough that I resolved to pay for it to be done ever since.

So far mine have been done with Mastik one. The guy that installs them told me that he had to cut my Zipp tires off so I guess the glue worked pretty well.

When your Zipp tires do wear out you should really try out a pair of Veloflex carbons. It's amazing how much more I like them than the Zipps. There is a night and day difference. Of course I've been told that I had a defective set of Zipp tires (not by Zipp) so you probably won't notice as big of a difference as I did.

vittoria mastik one has the highest tested adhesion on carbon and alloy rims and it sets faster than anything else. Cures in less than an hour. It works almost too well and removal is difficult. I glued with continental last night and it was tackier than vittoria but it is tested to not be as strong.

So the question is ....how strong is strong enough? I don't want to roll a tire but in the same breath I dont want to spend a hour on the side of the road trying to get a flat off......ie: Lowcell's Mastik comment.

I like the Conti if I still used glue. Tape works great even when racing. Also whoever said Veloflex makes the best rubber is absolutely right. However I use Conti Sprinters lately, coming off Vittorias i really like the Conti Sprinters. and they are cheap so if you train on Tubular it is a great way to go.

Yes I am very, very impressed with my Veloflex tires. They aren't cheap but they are worth the price.

As far as clean up goes, if you put masking tape on the braking surfaces of your rims before you apply the glue, you won't have to clean anything up.

I think that Panacement is easy to work with if you need to remove a tire.

In terms of adhesion strength:

vittoria>continental>panacement

I think Conti is the sweet spot. Vittoria is good if you have mastered the art (and it is most certainly an art) of glueing tubs.

I have used the conti cement. I now use the Mastik one because when I was ordering I found the little can. I find them both pretty much the same.

3M Fastack Trim Adhesive #8031. Used it for years, not sure if its still available. Sears carried it in the automotive section.

I wonder if Liquid Nails would work, maybe the Latex version?

liquid nails becomes hard, no? All the glues I have worked with retain some sort of tacky consistency. I would be hesitant to try liquid nail on a carbon wheel.

I always liked Vittoria's glue, just do yourself a favor and stay away from Tubasti (trust me on that one).

so here is my new problem I have been trying to get hold of the guy I bought my wheels from but no luck. My Zipps came with a pair of Tangente tires already glued on but I have no idea what kind of glue was used. From my readings I have learned that I do not want to mix different brand glues so I do not know what I should use to pre-glue my spare. My only choice I guess if I cannot get hold of the seller is to strip off ALL of the old glue and start from bare. Before I do that I will grab a phone book and start calling all of the shops around Birmingham to see if I get lucky and find the shop that glued the tires on for him.
