Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am guessing your bike came with pedals that have toe clips.

If you are considering buying cycling shoes, you also need to decide which type of pedal to buy. The pedal will determine what type of shoes you need because not all shoes work with all pedals.

In answer to your first question... No, you don't need to wear bike shoes.

There are advantages, but if you aren't having discomfort in wearing your sneakers, then you don't need to change.

The main advantage of cycling shoes is they are more stiff in the sole to help make pedaling more efficient.

You can use some cycling shoes without changing pedals, by simply not using the cleats, and use your current pedals. However, some other advantages of cycling shoes are that you can wear cleats and the clipless pedals that go with them.

The main disadvantage of cycling shoes is that they are not as good for walking, even mountain shoes, which are OK to walk in are not ideal for walking... So if you do a lot of walking after you commute, you will either need another pair of shoes to change into, or deal with less than optimal walking shoes.
