Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That makes no sense. I do know that when I ride my bicycle, people are rude, honk, yell, etc... I also own and ride a Harley, and strange enough no one is rude, honks or yells...however they still try to kill you though!!! Glad you made it without being injured!!

Scary dude, I ride that road fairly often as well, although usually going downhill. +100 on reporting it to the police.

Yes, I'm going to let the local police know it happened. My guess is that they will blow it off, and I'm envisioning the scene in The Big Lebowski where The Dude asks the cop if he has any leads:

"[the Dude asks the Auto Circus Cop if there are any leads on who stole his beater car] Leads, yeah, sure. I'll just check with the boys down at the crime lab, they've got four more detectives working on the case. They got us working in shifts! Leads!"

And for you Bay Area people, it happened about 1 mile before Castro Ranch Road, heading north on SPDR, on the somewhat fast downhill section.
Levi was right there not too long ago killing the local TTT. At least there is a decent shoulder on that road so he didn't shoot you and then run over you......but still. Makes me angry to think about it.

I bet the muscle in my ass would have richoted that BB right back in the eye of the shooter!

Seriously tho...this type of behavior angers me. I deal with jackass Bay Area drivers on almost every ride! One advantage of getting out on the mt bike is not having to put up with stupid people. well....

If I found their car afterward, I'd pour sugar down the gas tank... or worse. Probably go on a nice little vendetta of sorts - really take my time about it.

That sounds like El Sobrante. I think they don't even have their own police and they contract with Richmond PD for services... and of course Richmond PD deals with lots of gun crime. Report it of course, don't expect much.

We could maybe have a BF stake out next week - same day same area, watch for same pick-up, round 'em up, pop a cap in some tweaker's @ss.

Or for laughs, baby powder by the windshield cowl. Takes about 2-4 seconds to fill the interior when they turn on the ac/vents. Or for evil pleasures, use any thing that smells bad.

FWIW- It's not an assault, it's a battery. Battery is direct contact while assault is fearing the battery. They are often charged at the same time because the person sees the object that is going to hit him, but in this case, I suspect not.

That really sucks! I would be extremely pi$$ed but with the cops around my area, if they're not giving a parking ticket, they don't care. FTL.

Man, just read this thread. Glad you are okay. I ride that road all the time, scary. I never thought of it as particularly dangerous, since the shoulder is so wide. Damn, think I'll give it a pass for a week or so.

I know it is a hassle reporting it, but on behalf of the rest of us who ride that road - thank you! If there is a pattern than maybe something will happen. I'd like to think it was a one-off but the reality is that until they get caught it'll probably keep happening.

Guess you mean West, towards Richmond? That Would be CCC Sheriff or CHP. If it was up by the park then your best bet would be to notify EB Regional Park Police. They probably have more time to deal with it. Sorry to hear you got spanked.

A reason I'd not carry a weapon. I am afraid of what i'd do. In fact is that not considered attempted murder. I was wondering where you live. I thought the Bay area was friendlier to cyclists than SO Cal.

I think this will be a county Sheriff deal - you don't enter El Sobrante until the end of the descent by Kennedy Grove. Parts of El Sobrante were annexed by Richmond, I think that the end of the descent is officially Richmond (there's a sign if I recall). Either way a call is good.

I'm hoping this isn't the start of a new trend - I've ridden that stretch of road so many times over the last year, I'm having a tough time imagining that. It ain't exactly the iron triangle out there, and I've always felt it to be a nice bike friendly road.

Definitely take a ride through the high school lots. I know a lot of kids at my school who are dumb enough to do this.
I was actually riding near my own school one day and some idiots threw tacks out of the bed of their truck. It was too bad that they didn't know it was me yet I knew them. The tacks ruined the tires I had just spent like $50 on the day before, I was pissed.
Next day at school I went to the parking lot at lunch and slashed the kids tires. The look on his face was priceless at the end of the day when he tried to leave.

Annoyed? I'd be friggin explosive!

I have unbelievable contempt for people who are just so stupid that they don't really think through what they're doing - unless these people are evil and want to possibly kill you by accident or something they obviously are so stupid (as are many others) that they don't realize that their actions can cause serious situations.

Like drivers who purposely try to buzz by you and then slow down to give you a dirty look: do they think that by putting your life in danger they're going to finally "teach that person a lesson"? Why don't these people realize what risks they're running by doing this, even if they don't like us on "their" roads?!

I tried to explain to some guy who pulled over that tailgating me, leaning on the horn for long periods of time and then swerving by me really put me close to crashing but he told me that I was putting his life in danger by blocking the roads (I was on the side... and it was a middle-of-nowhere country road). He got so mad that he got out of his car until I reached for my saddlebag and said I was calling the cops.

Honestly - some people are so militant while in vehicles...

Knowing the place, I think any organized plot to BB cyclists would take too much brain power for those knuckle-draggers to pull off. The Richmond Police would probably roll their eyes - they are usually busy with their assault weapons and Humvees busting meth houses, or dragging bodies out of the mudflats, to bother with a "nuisance" call. I don't think you have to avoid SP Dam Road in particular - this could happen anywhere in the Bay Area, even in Lafayette or, god forbid, in Orinda.

Was riding with a friend last Sunday and on Camden/Blossom Hill some punks in a white truck started yelling at us, showing fingers and so on, they were very aggressive. WTF is happening here?
