Cleaner had bike accident, now wife doesn't want me to ride
My cleaner had a bike accident (details sketchy but I heard hse broke her legs and ribs - will be in hospital for a few months - I'm not sure what other damage (no helmet).
Anyway, now my wife's sending me emails telling me how dangerous bikes are; I think she's gonna discourage me from riding. But we on BF are not the discourageable types.

Tell her she's not allowed to drive a car anymore because you read in the paper that someone got in a car accident.

And that she's not allowed to shower any more, because people falling in the shower and cracking their skulls are much more common than bicycle injuries.

Don't forget that the rest who don't die are twice as likely to have heart issues from being overweight and sedentary.
Riding your bike is like... the only way to stay alive.
I can also suggest from past experience, that telling her "Yeah, but the dry cleaner was an idiot." will not help anything.

Yeah, I get that BS all the time, but not from my wife. My idiot father-in-law saw an episode of COPS on TV where a guy on a bike (notice I didn't say cyclist) got popped by a car. He uses that one instance as an argument that I should think of my family and stop riding my bike.
As an aside, he's been in 4 car accidents in the past 5 years...all his fault.
I guess my wife figures if I get hit, she gets rich.
I guess by some people's rationale, we should stay inside and just knit soft blankets. Of course, someone would trip and take a knitting needle to the eye and everyone would be up in arms about the danger of knitting needles.

Yeah this kinda stuff comes up all the time whether it's from wife, coworkers, friends, parents, etc...
"You bike on the road? But that's so dagerous." My response can vary but sometimes is along the lines of "crossing the sidewalk can be dangerous too."

I wish people would stop being such pansies.
Life IS dangerous and we are ALL going to die. Get over that fact and enjoy your time here.

Fixed. Seriously.
If you want a nice graphic:
Bicycle deaths are a little pencil point below walking

It's far worse if you ride a motorcycle. Everyone has to tell you every story they've ever heard about someone that was killed, crippled, or just thoroughly mangled while riding. It gets pretty old, especially when you've been riding for over 35 years with no serious crashes.
I picked my M.D. specifically because he rides a motorcycle and I wouldn't have to listen to "the speech" from him. Doctors love to give motorcycle riders a hard time.
So during the physical, he says "Wow, you're in great shape for your age. How do you do it?"
"I ride my bicycle everywhere".
"You know, that's really dangerous".

Not really. Look at the graphic I posted. The odds of dying as a pedestrian are much higher.

My wife understands that I'd rather die riding a bike than live sitting on a couch. Yours should too.

You do know the inherent flaw in that information is that it does not take into account the number of people who do each activity. That chart gives a person who does not ride a bike the same odds of dying on one as someone who rides 300 miles a week.

The thing to remember is that those odds are calculated by taking (number of bike deaths per year) divided by (number of deaths per year). But how much does the average American bike? As opposed to drive their car? Or cross a street to grab a bagel? While, yes, the OVERALL odds are definitely lower, things do get a lot fuzzier for someone who bikes a substantial quantity of miles per week. For every mile you bike, 500 Americans probably all drive 20. Same for motorcycling.
Not saying anybody should give up their biking...just that those "chances of dying" things only really apply to things that hit across the board e.g. heart disease/cancer.

I got hit by a car and my wife never even questioned whether I'd get back on a bike, let alone someone else having an accident affecting what I can or cannot do.
On a side note, I do however question the judgment of people who ride without helmets as I distinctly remember my head bouncing off the ground during my accident. Not sure how much damage would have occurred without a helmet, but I'm more than satisfied not having the answer to that question.
