Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In Cook County it says BICYCLE PATH not walking or ******** dog walking trail on 20' leashes if they would read the rules it says walk againist bike flow so you can see them coming. Sometimes I get as close as I can just to scare the S*it out of them. If they don't hear or see you they won't get in your way. A couple of weeks ago I said on your left and a polish lady turned around and run right into her at 18 MPH received a couple of rashes and she got the worst of it.

This may sound dubm (yeah, that's right, DUBM) but I always give a little shout 'behind you' and keep one arm out in case they drift over to guide ( i.e. push into ditch) them if need be. In Ter-rana, riding in the summer should be an Olympic event. There are too few paths in the city and so many people who would like to enjoy them. Every P.O.S. SUV should have a bike path tax incorporated with them. Imagine all the extras paths we'd have. Then again, with gas a $1.22 a litre today, they may have seen their day already. Damn, who we gonna tax next?

They already do. Gas taxes fund the Highway Trust Fund. Under the Highway bill, the current version of which is SAFETEA-LU, Federal Highway Trust Funds are use to fund projects which include bike paths.

See: https://www.bikesbelong.org/node/31

Thus the more gas SUV's burn, the more taxes come in, and the more funds are available for projects such as bike paths.

I don't care if it startles pedestrians. It serves as a reminder that they need to keep to the right also.
+1 - that tells them what is going to happen. Expecting people to think for themselves today is useless. That's why I'm not a fan of the bell. It's not obvious that a bell means "move right." Most people take it as a "hello."

A little harsh, but I completely agree with the first part. Sometimes the walkers, baby strollers, dog walkers look at me like I have some kind of nerve riding my bike near them at any speed faster than they're bumbling along at. Hey, the trail IS for everyone, but it is SPECIFICALLY called a BIKE TRAIL! And signage on the trail that my tax dollars paid for denote that very term, BIKE TRAIL.

I guess Denver pedestrians are better trained than many ;-)

I tested it out again today. I went out for a quick 30 mile ride down to and around the reservoir. The only place where there were pedestrians on the trail was near the mall and I only had one group that I had to announce to. Four elderly women in polyester pant suits and lots of hairspray. I figured they were a good test case, since they were also walking four abreast, taking up the whole trail.

As I approached, I slowed and said "on your left," and the left two women dropped in behind the others, allowing me to pass. True, we get some problem people, especially those that walk on the bike-only side downtown (trail is split for wheels and non-wheels, meaning roller bladers share with bikes), but generally, they are fine.

After the mall, I only saw cyclist, and most moving at a good clip, as I was. I got a flat out by the reservoir and all three cyclist who passed me while I was repairing it checked to see if I needed anything.

"NO BRAKES!!!" usually works pretty good for me.

And it's even more likely to cause confusion skiing, given that you don't have lanes, and a natural set of rules to stay right, and you may pass on either side.
You are right, but I hate to tell you but I have probably used this for well over 20 years without a problem. However, it is usually on trails when I have been trying to get around someone, not on an open slope

That, or, "I'm going to puke." Gets you through crowded places in a jiffy. On your left works too.

Because passing on the left is a Rules of the Road issue, and frighteningly few people comprehend that the RotR apply to bicycles as well as cars (with a few exceptions). That's why you see people doing things on a bike that they would NEVER do in a car, such as riding against the flow of traffic, on the sidewalk when there's a perfectly good bike lane two feet away, riding at night with no lights (I almost hit somebody the other day who was doing that), completely blowing through stop signs, etc.

No, idiots that reorganize the family outing in the middle of the bike path or allow their kids to wander around the bike path as they please are the soccer moms of the bike paths. Roadies are the boy-racer rice rocketeers of the bike paths.
