Sprinting from the hoods

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sprinting from the hoods

I think Ivan's DS needs to put some sort of electric shock device on his hoods, and activate it remotely at 1000m to go. He's so much better than that! He has so much power, but his frontal area on the hoods is so much greater than the others. <sigh>

Stage 2 (cyclingnews.com):

Stage 1(velonews.com):

He's just more comfortable in the hoods, probably a confidence issue. Although any real sprinter especially with a track background would only use the drops.

....not that anyone will ever confuse me with Ivan Domingues but I can't sprint from the drops for the life of me either......just not comfortable....

....but I'm usually so far behind everyone else that sprinting is a moot point.....

Looking at the second pic, it looks like he bends his elbows so much that's he's about as low as if he were in the drops. So for him, I doubt he's giving up much.

He'd still probably be better off in the drops, but who's going to tell him?

Same here... I can't sprint from the drops. I'm mostly on the hoods. But in my case it's the fat hindering my flexibility.

The "finish line" is basically a piece of plastic taped and draped across the road - you can see some of the wrinkles. I think the rear tire is an optical illusion.

brifters have dramatically changed the position of the bars and the positions riders use. many rider's hoods are in the same spot or very close to where drops used to be as recently as 2 decades ago. of course, pulling from the hoods is somewhat different than pulling from the drops, but if you can effectively pull on the hoods to add some push to your sprint, that's what it's all about.

and I would guess that if you were a div3 pro, sprinter or not, finishing in a break with LA, you might also be to tired to sprint well, no matter your position.

In that 2nd pic (stage 1 win), his torso's low, but his elbows are all over the place. Much more flared than the other sprinters. At 45mph, it matters... but he was still strong enough to overcome it -- he's such a badass.

In the pic vs. Lance, he's clearly nowhere near as aero as Lance, and his throw was hampered by holding the hoods (hands further out, means the bike is further back). That 4" difference alone can lose you a lot of sprints.

Not if your cockpit is set up properly. Too many people rotate the bars too far up and the hoods are high on the bars. Also, I rarely shift in a race sprint (the explosive part). Going from 32 to 38 mph isn't that much of an RPM change (maybe 20rpm).

his levers seem to be jacked up too high to shift while sprinting from the drops.
Lances also look jacked, but I can see he can still reach them, so that makes Ivan's extra jacked.
