Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

On a serious note, I am really really sorry to hear this. I know those waters well, having grown up in both Solana Beach and La Jolla - home to the La Jolla submarine canyon which happens to be the second largest great white population next to the barrier reef. I trained many times a week swimming out of La Jolla cove, including swim for the cove to Scripps pier and back - 3 miles over the really deep water.

You can swim 10 days in a row and bam, on the 11th you are out there and convinced that something big is just below. The whole swim back to shore is tense and nerve-racking as you tell yourself there is really nothing to worry about. The next day, back to normal again. We were convinced that those days weren't imagination, but our primitive instincts kicking in. Meaning something really was there.

I'm just shocked it was a great white. They don't show up near the beaches around here very often.

I never had much luck in running and would not stick my head under the water if you paid me, I think I will stick to bike racing.

Do you have a source for this statement?

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (in La Jolla) doesn't seem to agree:
...Rosenblatt, the Scripps scientist, said there isn't a resident population of white sharks off San Diego County...
--Richard H. Rosenblatt, a professor emeritus of marine biology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography

what the heck? yea la jolla doesn't have anything last I recall.
There are petty tiny sharks, but they don't really attack humans... they can't.

The idea of swimming in open water petrifies me. I think I'll stick to tri's with man-made lakes.

Okay, I'll admit I am going back (waaay back) in memory to dredge that factoid out. And it appears I am wrong, though it was definitely part of the local surf/swim lore when I was growing up. I quick web search confirms that the population isn't resident in the canyon, but part of an overall migration pattern from baja to Hawaii. Good catch and I learned something...

How tragic. Can you imagine how big the huevos must be on the two swimmers who turned around from 20 yards ahead to go back for the guy, knowing that there was blood in the water and at least one shark prone to attacking (maybe more)? Not to trivialize the event, but it's a bit ironic that the victim was a retired veterinarian.

Exactly, you are more likely to get killed by a car riding your bike than to be attacked by a shark while swimming in the ocean.

Maybe it's those numbers they draw on themselves that attract the sharks?

If you're in Deerborn, your chances of getting attacked by a shark are pretty low.

I'm in FL and spend a lot of time in the water. I've had a few close encounters. I'd say my chances are a little bit higher.
