Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

my new Six13 and the mangled spoke protector

So I'm pretty excited - yesterday I bought a sweet new Six13! There's nicer bikes out there but this is a big upgrade from my older Allez. The shop was busy so I said I'd come back for it after they tuned it etc. I also asked them to replace the dork disc.

What Cannondale's website doesn't show is that the stock Six13 disc is almost big enough to qualify as a wheel cover that you'd use for bike polo - and it's not clear, it's black. The bike had to leave the shop with one on, so I asked them to just put on a smaller clear one. Agreed, no big deal, no prob. Went back today in a hurry got the bike without really looking. Got home and...WHAT???

I guess putting on a new one would be too much work - they just took some scissors and cut the old one down. Are you kidding? I'm 50% angry that they thought that I wouldn't notice that hack work on a brand new bike, and 50% laughing at it. I can't see anything else wrong with it so hopefully they have at least one competent mechanic.

Really excited about the bike though, it's going to be great!

Just take the thing off. There is no need for it.

Yeah, they literally said it had to leave the shop with one on. Probably same with the stock reflectors etc.
I'm going to pop it off, I just asked for a replacement since i didn't really want to start banging on it yet with my own hack mechanic skills.

I'm not calling you a liar but...
I'm having a hard time believing that that was done in a bike shop.

It's easier if you remove the rear wheel but all you need are some tin snips or wire cutters to cut through it a couple times and wriggle out the pieces.

They had to be cracking up back there when they did that.

The customer may be king but in many states it is a state law/regulation that all bikes must be sold with reflectors and other misc safety equipment that comes off the minute it leaves the store. Your tax dollars hard at work...

OP - What they did is a joke. Here's my suggestion: Take the WHEEL in and ask them to remove the disk entirely. It's a 5-minute while-you-wait operation.

They covered their ass and tried to make you happy at the same time, at least they did something.

You can just take it off yourself.

Nice bike.

Just a guess but the guy who cut the spoke protector (dork disc) down will not get a job as a fabrication engineer at Ferrari.

30 seconds with tin snips/shears/wire cutters/whatever, and it's gone.

They were probably just trying to keep in line to the "Handmade in USA" logo.

1. Learn how to adjust your RD
2. Remove dork disk
3. Never mention this to anyone again.
4. Beg moderators to delete this thread using NSA protocol for overwriting the disk space it used to occupy.
5. Beg your wife to give you back your balls from her purse.

I think that they are protecting themselves in case the rear der shifts into the spokes and mangles the rear end If you bring it back in that condition they will say it is your fault for removing the dork disk.

Read up on the parktool website on how to remove the cassette and get the tools to do it. It's an easy job, the tools aren't expensive, and you should know how to do it.

LOL, that's the best laugh I've had in a week. I bet it looks great when the wheel spins. I had take them 5x the time to do that than to just take it off, any nicks on your spokes?

Just hack it off and move on.

My rule of thumb is that if you want your dork disc off, you should take it off yourself by removing the cassette.

If you don't know how to do this, then you might want to leave the disc in place.

A friend of mine has one of those black dinner plates on his Cdale R2000. I don't have the heart to say anything because then I would also have to mention his helmet mirror.

Yeah, hopefully they didn't bang it up too much. I do have the tools to take it off properly, no hacking required.
Actually I have to go back to the store to retroactively get a discount (their Cdales are going on sale later this week) so I think I'll take the disc back to em "maybe you can use this on another build".

They probably knew you were just going to take it off (since you asked them to remove it in the first place), requesting to get a smaller one was kind of silly, so they just hacked it down...

Just HTFU and hack it off, takes less than a minute with scissors or wire cutters...

OOOr you could go through the process of taking off the cassette to remove it.
