Bike Lane Battleground

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good article. When I got to the page, there was a large add for a Toyota Sequoia that was almost as large as the feature photo. Kind of ironic...

Unfortunately, especially in a city like New York City, these lanes are seen as something that can be blatantly ignored by motorists and the laws regarding them are often more sizzle than steak. Police in the city often have more "important" things with which to concern themselves. Drivers, in general and especially in big cities are often ignorant of traffic laws regarding cyclists or worse...do not care. It is the same all over.

Cheers,

Brian

This is very true, but it is also why cities have parking enforcement staff separate from the police. They are much cheaper and actually bring in revenue. However, parking and driving in NYC is such a mess (I don't live there, but I have) that people will risk $115 fine to park in the bike lane "for just a minute." I would say the fine is too low. Right now, even if they got caught every fourth time or so, it is probably worth the convenience to most drivers.
