Thumbs down to Lance in general- Thumbs up to his new store.
While I don't generally like Lance at all (*** on the bike***-clarified for djbowen1- great article at FC), I do appreciate his efforts in Austin with new Mellow Johnny's bike shop. Even if he's doing this 'cause he broke-ass, still, the effort is worth lauding.
He still is a rather curmudgeonly ******* that I wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley dressed as a UCI pee sample taker...
What do you guys think? Apart from being a great PR job, is the effort laudable? or just hype that will leave him an empty store after Labor Day?

I think "laud" was on the word of the day calendar ... and I applaud LA's efforts (and I think his store concept is fantastic and will succeed).

Cool. He wrote that for a long time he never rode for fun, or as transportation. For him now to open a bike shop with the goal of promoting bike commuting is very cool indeed.

i dunno much about lance's new shop, but from what i've heard, it's a lot like bike coops that exist around the world already.
check www.bikecollectives.org for one near you.
as for whatever lance wants to do with his time/money/energy, if he gets more people on bikes, isn't that what counts?

Ask the owner of Bicycle Sport Shop (was Austin's biggest Trek dealer) what a great guy LA is, BSS put Trek on the map in Austin and supported LA from the beginning. The owner found out that LA was opening a Trek shop from a rep (not Trek). Good thing Specialized (his other line) has stepped up and started to build really nice road bikes.

If he didn't want Trek to sell to someone else, he should have arranged for geographic exclusivity.

I am not blaming Lance on that one, but rather Trek.

Forget that if I am selling Treks, and really helped build the brand in my area, just to find out without company notice that Lance Frickin Armstrong was getting a Trek franchise in my city. I would be rather pissed.
