Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SRAM - Shimano - Campy; Derailleur Cables

I know that Campy shifting cables have a different head than Shimano, but does SRAM require different cables or is the gruppo compatible with Shimano shifting cables?

(I know that all brakes use the same).

Thanks

My friend has SRAM Red shifters and they apparently have been getting a lot of gripes in shifting quality recently (just use google)...... Do you have any shifting problems with using the DA or Campy cables on SRAM???? Is there one that works better?

On another case, does anyone know why Red is having bad reviews from some people in shifting (noise, etc.)? This is totally weird as the top offerings from Shimano and Campy have basically zero shift problems.

I had about 3000 miles on my red with no problems. Before my race on Sunday I noticed that the FD was loose on the mount, so I tightened it and adjusted it. In the race I had a hard time shifting to the big ring and then dropped the chain when shifting to the small ring on a climb (it cost me the race, I had to work so hard to catch back onto the pack I subsequently blew up and lost them). Since then, I've been having trouble with it all week, getting it to shift up to the big ring, rubbing, etc. There is a lot of flex in the cage, which doesn't help. I moved it up a bit this morning and I think it is finally behaving itself. Other than that, no problems, but I have noticed that it is noisy. Some people said its due to the chain... I may try a KMC chain, I've heard they are supposed to be nice and quiet.

That's too bad, but I am reading that it's pretty common. I wonder how many people are having this noise issue (I'll put up a poll).

Personally, I think this is totally unacceptable for a +$2000 gruppo.

There is no need for you to be paying anything close to that for RED. $1500 is more like it if you're good with your purchasing options.

and, by the way, it's a GROUP. Not a 'gruppo'. SRAM, nor Shimano, are Italian.
