how big a factor is derailleur age?
(also posted in mechanic forum...wasn't sure which would be the best)
I'm looking for thoughts regarding the purchase of a used bike when it comes to component age - particularly derailleurs but also any other components I should be aware of. I have seen comments similar to the following: a new Shimano 105 is as good or better than the Ultegra line from a couple years ago.
Is this statement true? Is there a place I can compare specs/performance of component models from different years?
I've been shopping many used bikes on CL and Ebay. For an example to this topic, I'm looking at a 2006 Specialized Roubaix with Ultegra components and ~1600 miles on it. If I was to buy new, the 2008 Roubaix Elite uses 105s instead. Have design advances made the 105s of today technically as good or better than the 2 year old Ultegras or am I in better shape with the higher line of components of 2 years ago that have not been heavily used?
Thanks.

Weights of Shimano groups haven't changed much in the last 5yrs. Style has changed more than anything. I would say an Ultegra group from a few years ago is not a problem. Esepecially with only 1600mi on it.
The BB-6500 on the older Ultegras are Bombproof, and last your many years. It's one of my personal favorite BB's, and is extremely reliable for long term use. About the only thing I may do outside of normal maintenance before use on that bike, is inspect the gear wear (dolphinning), check the jockeys and maybe throw on a new chain.
The main concern with a der, is the spring tension, and the jockeys. Check the condition of the pulleys, if they seem a bit worn, get some new alloy replacements from Performance for $15. Cheap.
The main spring is another issue. Though the main tension spring generally lasts for years with no trouble, it can wear and get weaker over time.
Though if the der is only a couple of years old, I wouldn't worry about it. Sans physical damage from crashes or falling and scraping, it should work virtually like new with some new pulleys.
