Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So I need a new Helmet and was wondering if there was a decent bargain helmet out there that would work well.

I got a Specialized Chamonix for $49.99 from my LBS. Seemed like a good deal to me, but then again I'm new to the world of road cycling.

I've been riding the Ascent R-18 from Nashbar for a year now and feel that it is a great helmet for the money. I got a catalogue in the mail today that lists it at $29.95 and their website lists it for $32.95. Who knows.....it's comfortable.

Get something that fits. That way, you won't mind wearing it.

Helmet

Do some helmets make less wind noise than others? Was thinking it would be easier to hear cars approaching from behind if i did not have the wind noise. I am fairly new also. Thanks in advance

Yeah I was going to start a thread asking about this. I think I am getting a bit faster now and my old pasta collander Giro is making a lot of wind noise.

^^^I feel like the majority or wind noise is caused by the straps that sit right in front of your ear - thus you can adjust the majority of it away.

It doesn't look as flashy as some of their higher dollar helmets but the Giro Transfer is a solid helmet at a great price ($30 full price, right now on sale at both REI and Performance for ~$20). The main drawback to cheap helmets is they are generally "universal" size. Since these by definition need to be big enough for the largest size the fit tends to be less than ideal if you have a smaller head (and might not fit if you've got a gigantic melon). But if you're towards the large size of helmets this is a solid helmet at a great price.
