Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which road bike...thread. Allez v. Ventura v. Satellite

I'm looking towards an all-purpose road bicycle in the $500-$800 range. I've narrowed it down to mainly 4 bikes, the Specialized Allez Double, Ventura Comp, Satellite, and Ventura Sport

Specialized Allez Double:

Ventura Comp:

Satellite:

Ventura Sport (albeit I can't stand the red):

What are the benefits of double crank vs. triple crank? Steel vs. Aluminum?

Lets just say these aren't groundbreaking questions, and people are tired of answering them. By not replying, they hope that you will search for and read maybe one of the 50 other times they've answered these or almost identical questions.

Satellite. It's steel. It'll do everything you want it to.

Consider the Mercier Corvus Steel from BD or Sprtymama on ebay. (I just got one and love it). It's a similar philosophy to the Satellite, and a better deal.

I don't want to open the steel vs aluminum can. Typically riders say steel rides better, but at a given weight it will cost more. I'm personally sold on steel. I think a well made steel frame is superior to Aluminum in almost every way save for rust... Others will disagree with me.

If you like the ride of the Satellite over the AL frames, steel is probably worth it for you.

Satellite or ventura comp.

The satellite will be a good all round bike that you can probably mount a rear rack to if you want to do some light touring. The allez isn't really better but costs more.

Whatever fits is the correct answer.
