Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Threads that should be retired and/or stickied

Having been an avid reader of the forum for several months, I make the following nominees:
(with apologies to David Letterman)

1. Campy vs. Shimano, which is better?
2. Anything remotely related to BikesDirect
3. Which is the best saddle?
4. Which is the best tire?
5. What is the best bang for the buck upgrade??
6. What wheels are the best?
7. Who is Pcad and what is his philosophy? (see also HTFU)
8. Someone called me "Fred," is that an insult or a compliment?
9. How do I get a red star???
10. Which bike should I get for $_____ (fill in the blank)

Feel free to add anything I forgot to mention.

Doug

Sticky all elitist Roadie threads. From what I hear, they get a lot of traffic.

Sticky the "Buy "Roadie" from Amazon.com" threads. Just for fun.

Bikes for $750 is already stickied. Pcad makes me laugh, and even botto, when he isn't trying to out-erudite us. (Although he just loses me with the modern art stuff.)

I still don't get the Bikes Direct venom, though I do agree the advertising is sleazy. (Almost makes me want to by from BD just to annoy botto).

The rest is just boys (and girls) being boys (and girls).

I think that there should be a quiz on the "We are going to yell at you" thread before anyone new can post to the road racing subforum.

What the heck else do we have to write/whine/complain about?
Remember, a day without complaining, condescending to, or insulting, is like a day without sunshine!

I have long been lobbying for an Equipment Forum or Buying Forum. The Bicycling Mag forum has a Buying Forum for that purpose. There, all the people wanting to know ... "what saddle should I get?", "what gloves should I get?", "what pedals should I get?" blah, blah, blah, can go to the Buying Forum.

Or perhaps this forum should just be renamed the Buying Forum.

Ah but remember .. schwag is only the stuff you're given at a cycling event (T-shirts, waterbottles, etc.) 98% of the threads here are about people who want to buy stuff.

Here's Bicycling Mag's Buying Forum ..... doesn't it look a lot like this forum?
https://forums.bicycling.com/eve/foru...rm/f/612104717

Really ... I think this forum could be renamed, and then maybe the Racing subforum could become a main forum.

i agree with you for the most part. Those of us who have been at this for a number of years find most of the "which is better" or "what should I buy" questions to be sort of lame but frankly, I just don't even open them so it's not really a big deal. At the same time, road cyclists do have a reputation for being sort of snobby elitists so this may be one of the few forums where the lesser "educated / skilled" can ask questions without being condescended to in a bike shop. When I was a kid and would hang out around the drag strip (yes, I was one of those), if you asked a question because you didn't know the answer, you often got socially slapped down by those older guys who you looked up to, which was unfortunate.

SO, whereas 4 years ago, I would write a response as to which is better, Campy or Shimano, now I just take a pass. Most of this stuff is sort of learn by doing and all of our advise on which X to buy is just that.

I think Dr. Pete's Thread consolidation: Whatever you bought today, it sucks covers everything nicely and deserves a sticky.

Hum... I'm a noob here but let me see...

- Any thread involving somebody (either car or bike) running a red light or a stop sign. With the exception of those where somebody actually got hurt.

- Anything that could potentially start a camelback vs water bottle war.

15. A Michigan Redneck just threw a full can of PBR at me from his pickup. It hit me in the head and I took a preety bad spill. Now I have a broken collarbone. And my bike is broken too.
A. Should I sue?
B. How long will I be off the bike?
C. Is my bike repairable?
D. Should I buy a new helmet?
E. What's a dork disc?

Michigan redneck?
The sun doesn't shine long enough here to give anyone a red neck.
Try Texas.
