Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help with a limited budget

Hi,

I have been riding a GMC Denali for almost a year now and I would like to start racing in college next year. I have 1000 USD for a new bike and gear. I am not sure what to get and how much I should spend on the bike alone. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Daniel

Get a used Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, etc.
Shop around and be patient.
Good luck.

At the risk of inciting a riot, if you can do your own wrenching, you could get one of these from bikesdirect for about $800, and have enough left over for a jersey and some socks. Maybe a shoe or two.

Used would probably be as good or better--at least you could ride it beforehand and see if it fits. Also, the Mercier has a triple and a couple other items that will get chuckles from fellow racers.

Used off CL can be great if you have bike knowledge and live in a fairly big metropolitan area.

Otherwise, I like BD.
