Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheelset Recs

Looking for a wheelset, budget is about $600. Would like it to be reasonably durable, useful for training and commuting (commute is 7 miles, over fairly smooth roads). Prefer aero over light. I'm about 130lbs.

Don't know if you're going to touch aeros for $600, but these are nice:

Good luck.

In that budget, I'd go for regular wheels. Any of these would do, the CXP33
is a little more aero and bombproof.

Are you happy with that fork? You could save some weight there.

get some IRD Cadence Aero/Kinlin niobium 30mm deep rims. They're cheaper, lighter and more aero than CXP33 rims.

have a wheel builder build them up with ultegra hubs and 2.0/1.8/2.0 double butted spokes.

Last I talked to the owner, they were due soon. Had a hold up in production or something as these things normally do.

Send him an email on the site, he'll get back to you. Nice guy.

His wheels look so sweet, especially given the price.

At your weight, probably not haha.

They have issues with braking as the brake surface is really thin. I wouldn't trust them if I was riding speedy downhills often.

600 bucks is a lot for a wheelset. If you can't afford zipps, HEDS, or spinergys doesn't mean you have to go for a 'budget bombproof wheel'.

Williams, soul, and neuvation, as well as a lot of wheelbuilders can give a lot of good options in that price range.

I'm going to throw out the obligatory Xero XR-1 recommendation. Light and Aero. Only requirement they don't fit is price, unless you buy 2 sets. Nice wheelset. No issues.

Not at your weight. I weigh 145 and have no problem riding Forte Titan wheels (16 spokes front, 20 rear). The 420s are pretty aero and seem to be a favorite amongst everyone except for people over about 180 lb.

Sort of haha. I've been commuting a lot on my bike and I didn't have money at the time (was in HS) for a good fork. I'm going to upgrade to a Reynolds/Easton fork soon, probably same time as I get the wheels.
