Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Allergies, performace, post ride wheezing etc..

I get hit by allergies kinda hard early on during spring. I am on Nasonex and right now am feeling good save for some occasionally watery eyes or a blocked nose. Once I start exercising though, I dont feel anything, just plain old lactic acid.

Off late though, after hard runs/rides, I have noticed a little wheeze. It doesnt really affect me and goes away after an hour or two. Is this something I should get checked out from the doc or is it pretty normal given the allergies and such?

On a tertiary note, does having allergies elevate ones resting HR? limit performance?

allergies alone shouldnt cause an increase in HR or BP. however, most over the counter, and many prescription allergy meds, do cause increased HR and BP.

I have the same problem. I have asthma, and very bad plant allergies. I use generic Zyrtec, Nasonex, and Asmanex daily. I still have wheezing problems when I get home, not too bad while riding, except for very cold weather. I don't use albuterol anymore, I use Xopenex, which is similar, but does not make my heart rate go up. I still am wheezy after longer rides while the pollen is out, but it is usually gone overnight.

For years I was on prescreption meds (Claritin, Allegra, etc)... due to increased prescription co-pays this year, I tried OTC Alavert, and its worked just as well for me.

On days I've forgotten to take it, I've had the same reaction as you described.

I found that while allergies make me uncomfortable—in fact, miserable since moving to PA—they don't limit my performance. Zone 6, however, will cause an asthma attack.

Thanks for the info people. It looks like I should get back to the allergist and maybe have a stress test done. The doc recommended allergy shots last year but I balked at the extended loading periods and weekly injections.

While I am fine and have never had any respiratory issues, it did have me concerned as my sister had asthma as a kid and I saw how bad it could get for her.

Steaktaco, I never had allergies till I moved to NE about 3 years back and its kinda gotten worse every year since. I found that I was even allergic to dogs despite growing up with two of them! Last year I had a good 2 weeks of a nasty respiratory infection which was why I went to allergist the first place and Nasonex was a 1000 times more effective that claritin.

artifice, will ask him about Alavert. It so happens that almost every time i take a couple of those puffs into my nose, I sneeze 2 minutes later.. It tickles my nose hair just right I guess

Yeah... my allergies were barely there when I lived in Manila, Santa Monica, Madison, and Chicago. They were extreme in Columbus, OH and now in Philadelphia.

My doctor prescribed Nasonex for daily use; Astelin and Optivar for when it's really bad. For asthma he prescribed Singulair for daily use and Albuterol for working out.

I still remember the day I tried all my new drugs at once. It was a race day.

Addendum: Now I'm just down to using Zyrtec, because I've come to the conclusion that when nature is on a rampage, nothing is going to stop it. Might as well be less drugged.

Have you been checked for EIA ... go to your Dr., and have him/her send you for a lung/breathing test at the hospital lab.

I was diagnosed with EIA a few years ago, and I've got two inhalers ... one is a fast-acting, short-lived one; the other is a slow-acting, long-lived one. There are days I could hardly cycle without them!

I also have very mild allergies, and Claritin seems to take care of those for me.

How about I couldn't feel my legs? I bowed out of that race in the first lap.
