Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Eating at night...!

Is there anyone else that has a near daily urge to eat late at night (i.e. 12am or later)?

For a very long time, I have had to eat something at night or having discomfort while sleeping. I usually just eat something like, like a bowl of cereal. I get this urge regardless of what I eat before (for example, I ate three slices of pizza to carb-load for today's ride to work, and I still got hungry at around that time).

ditto. if i could stop eating late at night my bibs would fit better. all things considered a bowl of cereal isnt that bad as long as it is mostly whole grain. sometimes hunger is a sign of fatigue try going to sleep 30min sooner.

I was in the restaurant industry for many years working the dinner shift. I have a bad habit of eating late and staying up late. Still a night owl. I have cut sugar (ice cream), which is good, but I had the most awesome chicken fajitas with fresh guacamole, all made at home, around 10:30. Oh yea, fresh corn oil fried corn chips, too. Yum! I'll be up for a while digesting, and I do ride hard at least 3 times a week, usually 4. Good luck getting rid of the hunger!

I usually eat for two and always have a pretty good late meal / snack... keeping my weight stable is a challenge due to the amount of riding I do.

When I don't eat at night, I end up being very hungry the next day and have a hard time remaining satisfied.

anyone for some waffles and canadian maple syrup as a night snack?

Main issue for me is that I can barely eat anything in the morning, so I take a bigger lunch and dinner and sometimes will snack at night.

For you day-shifters who've never conquered the late night eating temptation, I'm here to tell you that once you do, everything falls into place. When I was on day shift, I never, EVER ate past 9:00 p.m., and I believe it helped some of the weight melt off. I work nights now, so I do eat at night, but I have adjusted my eating to follow that schedule.

Get up earlier to ride, whether you commute or just want to get in an early morning ride. I mean early like 4:00 a.m. - treat yourself to a big, fat smoothie and some French Toast.

Why not just sleep at night?! Nah I feel you...I normally do a little yoga and then eat tuna (lot of proteins) with mais...makes me sleep like a baby!

I'm don't go crazy about it. If I eat too much, like two bowls of cereal, then I stay up for most of that night. If I eat something light but a bit fillling, I can go to sleep right away.

Embrace it but watch the heart burn.

I like whole wheat bread with ketchup followed by chocolate (skim) milk in my sleep walks. Eat it, pee, back to sleep.

In high school, I used to eat a bowl of cereal and/or drink like 1/4 a gallon of OJ (straight from the container) most nights. I did play football, wrestled, and did track, and a lot of times they overlapped, so I was constantly craving food.

At 25 I don't eat nearly as much but when I get upwards of 150-200 miles/week, night time cravings do come back.

I get an incredible urge to eat right around 3:30am, but to me, that's just breakfast.

Agreed. I don't even ride all that much (100-150 miles on a good week, sometimes much less), but I can't imagine being able to maintain my weight without my huge PB&J before bed. I am trying hard enough to level off as it is.

That's more like fat loading, which I'm not sure works. And how far away is work, like 30miles? Not saying I don't eat pizza but let's call a spade a spade and not say it's just for the ride.

I will often have a pizza the night before a big race, but I get mine without cheese.
