Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

patching a tire

i have a tire with a couple of hundred K only. i had a flat. there is a cut in the tire about 5mm long. someone told me to throw it away as with 110psi the tube will push through the cut and i'll just get another flat. i was thinking about cutting a patch out of an old tire and gluing it to the inside of the tire. any thoughts? is it ok to do this?

It'd be worth trying just out of curiousity. I suspect it may hold together for the time being, but still leave a lump that goes "bump bump bump" as you ride.

I had a cut a little bit bigger on a 26x2.125 tire with 45 psi, and that's what happened to it- worked fine for a while, then started getting this funky little ofset at the spot, with a noticeable bump.

small cut out patch from old pair of jeans + epoxy.

failing that, wrap tube with plumbers strap tape + multiple layers of duct tape

1cm gashes will hold with these methods, except the tape method bulges.

hmm... my tire is 700x23. the minimum recommended pressure is 110 so I'm guessing it will not work. bummer. gotta toss almost a new tire.

thanks for the reply

I had a cut in the tire about the same size, maybe a few mm longer. I tried a patch, but it did not ride right so I replaced it. It sucked because the tire was less than a week old, and had to foot out some more cash for another tire.

Had a similar incident. Ran over a bottom from a glass bottle that was intact. Didn't have an issue but when I got home from the ride I noticed an inch slice on the side wall. It didn't get through the "guts of the tire" just the outer sidewall rubber. I rode it the next day with no issues but I have ordered a new tire. The old one was 3 weeks old. $50.00 bucks shot!!
