Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ever bought the same bike

Have you ever bought / considered buying the same or very similar bike and if so why?

The reason I ask, I love my Lemond Etape and would like to make the trip to the beach again sometime (25 miles each way). The trip itself is pleasant with amazing views of the ocean and wildlife as you get closer to destination. I can't see myself locking this bike up (possibility of being scratched / low possibility of vandalism or theft). I also would not want to leave it out for 8 hours exposed to elements even though if I'm at the beach chances are I did my homework on the weather scenario. Part of me has been wondering if I should just buy a 2nd bike that I expose to the elements and being locked up (I have a hybrid but do not enjoy the experience nearly as much as with this bike).

If you have the funds, buy as many bikes as you can! One can rarely have too many bikes...

No, you should just ride the sh#@t out of the bike you have, then in a couple of years, buy a new bike, baby that one, then use your beater bike to beat up on.

I had a year 2000 Giant OCR3 and I traded it in for a year 2002 Giant OCR3. The difference ... the 2000 had a double chainring, the 2002 had a triple.

Oh! I had a 2005 Trek OCLV 5000 as my training bike until I thinned the herd this spring.

All my bikes endure the same amount of abuse...

err...

well maybe the Miyata and Dahon will get winter duty as well since they can run the studded tyres.

Just get a kryptonite NYFU lock and lock it up with that. I use that with my attractive (to thieves) Rossin on small excursions like yours. I try not to keep it out of sight for too long though. Important part is that you immobilize the rear wheel with lock through rear triangle + rear wheel.

just ride it through rain once or twice, you won't worry about scratches or dirt as much afterwards.

Why would anyone want more than one bike?

buy a cheap fixed gear like a windsor or whatever BD is hawking. you'll enjoy the ride, improve your fitness, and lock it up or leave it out or whatever.
