Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

got my bike for graduation

so, i got my bike. it's a CAAD9 R5. Great bike.

I haven't been too far yet, it's rained a lot here. However I plan to ride this weekend in a group ride for WABA - 25 Miles.

Anyways. I love the bike. It's so light and fast, I couldn't ask for anything else as a beginning bike. My ass is a bit sore, and i'm loving the work out i get from all the damn hills around here. But it's still great.

question - does the area between your ass and well...balls, is that sore usually for a beginning rider? I haven't ridden in a few years, and I really noticed it today getting on the bike.

well thats about it, so we'll see how it goes..

Yeah.. cycling saddles take a while to get used to.

Also, stock saddles tend to suck. Majorly. And make sure that the saddle you have ISN'T too soft... soft saddles tend to let you sink into it, pushing up against the soft tissue inside that area. You want a saddle that's rock solid.

Go west 30 miles or so. I'll be glad to give you a route out at the end of the W&OD. It's about a 35 mile loop that comes right back to the trail, so you should have no problem getting there. It'll be a fairly easy coast back to town when you finish the loop!

No need to go 30 miles west of DC to find hills. Just go north of Columbia Heights -- plenty of hills in the northern part of the district. Lots of good hills in northern Arlington as well.

Alternatively, if you want flat and windy, just go out to DC unofficial velodrome: Hains Point.

Stick to the stock saddle for a bit. Your butt takes some time to get used to it.

Congrats on the bike!
