Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I find this post interesting as I live on the east coast and the prevailing winds (in Florida anyway) are from the east/southeast. Never been an issue here.

Black gritty coating in the humid east = blackflies and gnats. Mmmmmm. My dear husband wouldn't even give me a hello hug. Imagine.

Inhaled a couple too, sucking in the all the oxygen I could get on a steep little climb. I think I coughed 'em up the next day. Mmmmmmm.

Try heading out VERY early in the morning. I went out today at 6:45 which isn't that early but nevertheless the air really cleared up overnight and it was quite pleasant way to start the day. I'm planning to be out the door at 6 tomorrow.

If the diesel fume cancer kills the 2nd hand smoke cancer, wouldn't that mean it's a stronger cancer? That's like, SUPER CANCER.

I forgot to include all the damn buses and trucks... of course being in NYC, we have an exceptional density of such.

I always figured a one way commute in NYC is the equivalent of smoking a pack of cigarettes.

School bus exhaust is the worst.

Speaking of cycling in NYC being bad for your health, are you all healed up and riding again?

So true. I went for a ride yesterday and 20 mph winds kicked up for my return trip. Besides the 95% humidity and the wind I looked down at my shirt which was COVERED in black and green bugs. I'm surprised I wasn't coughing them up today...
