Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

entry level bike comparison

I know most of you hate BD but here is one vs an ebay bike i have found. My price range is not near any bikes in the local bike shops.
Here they are:

$329 u.s.
https://cgi.ebay.com/cheap-man-mens-R...2em118Q2el1247

$429 u.s.
https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/dawes/lt1200.htm

I am looking for best bang for your buck. Any suggestons for a 56-57cm not over 430 would also be great..
thanks.

Lots of people will tell you to go used (people uncomfortable w/ buying bikes online). This is a good option if you know what you're looking for (and can maybe bring a knowledgeable friend with you).

As for the two links you posted, I would stay far far away from the first link. It's just asking for trouble. No-name brand, questionable components (those wheels look like they'd implode over a curb), you get the picture.

I wholeheartedly recommend the BD bike, as will others on here. The trick is ordering the right size.

I would opt for that Ebay bike. I rode my Windsor Dover for over a year and logged at least 2500 miles on it. This was before I got -serious- about road biking. Still, it was a fine ride and I had ZERO problems with the Sora components. Do a search on "Shimano Sora" and read all about it. Most have no issues, some have problems with the design, and only a handful have a real problem with the quality.

What you'll be getting is a starter bike. Something that gets you around and is functional. If you are inclined at all towards road biking though, all this bike is going to do is show you the path. You'll then start yearing for more and will be taken down the slippery rabbit hole to all things expensive. Good luck with your quest.
