Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hammer Heed flavor

Tried out Hammer Heed sport drink on a hot, fast ride last night. Liked it, no stomach cramps like other sports drinks. I notice it comes in an unflavored version, anyone tried this? What does it "taste" like (I know it's unflavored but you know what I mean)?

It has a very, very, very subtle citrus flavor. About as close to unflavored as it could be, IMO. I don't care for their normal flavorings so I stick with the unflavored Heed.

I've had good luck with 1 scoop of lemon lime heed and 1/4 of a big scoop of lemon lime gatorade powder in a water bottle.

i thought the point of hammer heed was to eliminate all the HFCS and artificial flavoring that Gatorade offers. Why not just use the Gator.

Heed lemon lime for me, I use two scoops in a large water bottle. The taste is mild and not too sweet (like Gatorade).

Uh.. no. Among other things, the point of heed vs gatorade is that it's got a bunch of complex carbs whereas gatorade is pretty much all simple sugars. Adding a little bit of gatorade to the heed doesn't remove the complex carbs. It just adds some simple sugars. It's only a quarter scoop, anyway. Just enough to make for a better flavor.

Oh, and gatorade powder has no HFCS. The liquid stuff does, tho.

I like subtle berry Heed. Never tired the unflavored though. The subtle berry is pretty lightly flavored compared to about every other sports drink I've tried. It's slightly sweet, which is what I like about it, but leaves no film and does not get nasty tasting on hot days.

The new Melon Flavor is quite nice ... taste a little like watermelon hubbub bubba / melon bubble luscious chewing gum ) .
The unflavored Heed has a light sugar cane juice taste to it. If you need to add some kind of flavor to it just grab a juicer and toss some fruit in the juicer then mix some crushed ice and unflavored Heed with it. Perfect for a hot summer morning or afternoon ride.

I bet that Hammer would send you some samples of any of the HEED flavors if you request. I've been very pleased by customer service there.

PM me for referral # as will save you 15% on your 1st order!

I like the Hammer stuff in the winter when it is cool, it taste friggin nasty when it gets hot though. I don't use it in the summer. I will just drink water and use the Endurolyte pills in the summer.

+1 zillion for unflavored. Tastes like plain water with just a faint hint of sweetness to it. Great stuff, even quite refreshing on hot days.

I have found HEED causes me gastric distress...

It is the long chain maltodextrin...

I use Carbo-Pro and mix in Elete or Ultima for electrolytes...

Love Heed. Love Perpetuem. Love Recoverite. Love Hammer Gell. Love their bars. Love Hammer.

+1 to the referral. Pm me if you want one. I have given out many and saved a lot of people some $$$.

Not to sound like a comercial, but Hammer stuff has definitely changed my cycling, drastically, for the better. Not saying I couldn't have gotten there without Hammer, but I don't think it would have been nearly as easy.

Anyone have trouble getting on their site. Just tried it now and I still can't get on.

I used to use HEED, but found it to be too light for my liking when the heat was on in summer. Prefer Accelerade even though it has sugar in it. Do like recoverite and their gel. ****, I'd order some if I could ever get the site to come up.

working fine for me right now. Can also give a referral too

i got some gels and different drinks with my bibs i ordered i gotta try them out one of these days. Anyone know how big their scoops are? I have some Heed and Sustained Energy drink in little pouches but they say like 1-2 scoops or 1.5 scoops for the sustained stuff (in a pouch with a bunch of servings it seems)

The pouches are usually single serving. I'm looking at one right now (Recoverite) that says "1 Serving" on the front of the pouch at the bottom.

FWIW the scoop size is about 1/4 cup (total guesstimate).

Cool. it's funny all companies have their own sized scoop so you have no idea. My Cytomax scoop is way smaller than gatorade scoops

i'll try the whole packet and see how it goes.
