Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Road BIke!!!!!!!!!!!!NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys, I am looking to buy a good road bike for 800 dollars or less (less is better). I went to my local bike shop and they recommended the 2008 Scott speedster s60. They would sell it to me for $650.00 and throw in 4 free maintenance check ups. I have done research on it but i couldn't find too much info. ( or i did but being new to road bikes, didn't completely know what was good) I also took the bike out for a spin at the bike store and it felt very good to me and comfortable. If you know anything about this bike please comment or if you have recommendations. THANKS

Scott makes fine bikes, but from the looks of it, the S60 has all 2200 components... which is pretty low on the component scaling... for $800 you should be able to have tiagra or sora/tiagra mix... $650 seems pretty pricey for a bike with only 2200 parts..

For that pricing, I would try out some Jamis bikes, the Ventura Sport and Ventura Comp are nice bikes.

"4 free maintenance check ups"

WWIW my LBS gives those for free as long as you own the bike, so don't consider this much of a selling point.

You can get lifetime free tune-ups by learning to do simple things yourself. www.parktool.com and www.sheldonbrown.com have step-by-step instructions for virtually every repair. The stuff that a shop would do during a free 90-day tune-up is truly simple; you probably just need your hands and a little knowledge of which way to turn the adjusters.
