Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

getting the gf a bike... need help!

So my girlfriend's birthday is coming and she has been wanting a new bike to replace her awful kmart cheapy for awhile. She doesn't know what she wants specifically, but from questioning her and knowing her I'm thinking a road bike is what she wants. She has tried out a few and her reaction is the same, "I like it, its nice!" Then I get her to try another type of road bike and she says, "I like it, its nice!" So pretty easy to please, but hard to narrow down specifically what might be best for her.

Basically we want something sturdy, a brand that is known for lasting long. Doesn't have to be super light or super fast. And also a brand that comes in small sizes, like 49 at the most, smaller would be better.

I'm a little out of the know concerning road bikes, especially something that might be good for this situation, so any brands/models so I can get pointed in the right direction would be helpful.

price range is approx $600-$1000, possibly more if it comes down to that.

Buy her something cheap. Then use the money you saved for yourself.

well i actually ride a fixed gear as my main ride, and that isn't her thing. I plan on getting a road bike sometime in the near future but I want to get her something to get out and ride. and ride with me. She isn't a super fast rider.

sorry ih8lucky13, but this is all about her, i'm not skimping out to get myself something.

I've been looking at jamis line of female geared bikes. the ventura sport is very much at a good price point, but I'm thinking a carbon fork would make riding a lot more comfortable... they have a few others in-between. The satellite is an option in that case, but its a 27 speed, and, how do i put this. She doesn't like shifting that much. She might if she had a better bike, but I honestly think that having a ridiculous amount of gears might not benefit her.

I would recommend something with at least Shimano 105 as a minimum. The Sora shifting is a bit awkward.
