Everything was fine before BF
I was happy enough putting along on the Lemond. Such a chince I got pissed when I had to get a new chain.
Now after reading BF and subsequently wanting to ride more I want a new machine. I logged over 500 miles last month...got the urge to shave my legs, and even forced my wife to a local crit last Sunday. She was of course bored but secretly I just wanted to introduce her to what an expensive bike looked like.
Now I came across some coin...Potash options (aka..."they print money") and it's time to happily purchase a brand new bike.
Having not had an actual "bike shop new" bike since I was maybe 12, I am excited. I figure I'm probably in the $4K-$5K range. Not against $3k, but 4 is a round number....right?
N+1.

It's a lot easier to turn heads with $4k-5k than $3k. I think you made a good decision. Enjoy the hunt for the new steed. I like white carbon.

Why not contact a local framebuilder and get a frame that's exactly the right size for you? I got lucky. Colnago had an off-the-shelf frame that had exactly the right geometry, but my wife wasn't so lucky. She ended up with a Serotta Ti frame.
You'll be really happy riding a frame that you know was built exactly for you.

Go to Helen's in Santa Monica, find a frame that suits you (preferably a NOS, discounted one hanging from the ceiling in their showroom), build it up with '08 Campy Record from PBK or GVH Bikes, get some nice wheels, and go ride.
An example; They have a Colnago C50 in their right now that has slight cosmetic damage and is priced at (probably) 50% of retail.
$7k bike for $4-5k... done.

With that kind of coin, I'd check out a Serotta or Seven.

no Puts yet...we are still climbing. If you look at that hill on the link it looks like I may need a smaller gear even.
But yeah...I am nimble and I ain't hanging around for the decent!
Slacker's right...new helmet, new kit, the price keeps going up!

There are a lot of choices out there for that kinda money.
Take your time and ride several bikes.
Enjoy shopping.

I think the thing to do in this case is to bring a wad of cash to each LBS... wave it around a lot and tell them that you don't know anything about bikes (may be true, but doesn't really matter).
This should get their attention and you should be able to take them out on however long of a test ride you are willing to take.
Many LBSs would probably extend this to customers anyways, but I figured it would be nice to flaunt it while you've got it.
