quill stem for oversized bars?
Hi, I am looking for a quill stem (for my 98 trek 5200) to use with my 31.8 wing bars, so it will need a removeable faceplace. My current setup is the stupid threaded to threadless converter, but i feel like a total cheezeball with this ridiculous looking setup and it is damn heavy.
any suggestions (and dont say "dont use the wing bars" because i (my hands specifically) really like them)
thanks

You could try to find a 1" steerer threadless carbon fork and get a new headset and just convert to threadless. It would be more expensive, but a lot easier to find probably.

The only way to avoid cheeseball setup as you describe is a new fork, threadless headset, stem and bars. Never seen a quill for oversized but it would be nice.

or forget the wing bars, use a quill stem and conventional sized handlebars.

Custom stem? Many frame makers also make stems. No reason they couldn't do an oversize one if you pay the $.

you could do a threaded-threadless adaptor, which is just the inserted-into-the-steerertube part of a quill stem, with an area for a threadless stem to clamp on to. adaptors are just a few bucks.
but i doubt you'll be able to find an OS quill, considering they're standards at different times.

Oh how I hated the look of the threaded-to-threadless converter. Especially if I had the converter raised up a bit. The space between the bottom of the stem and the top of the headset became a sea of ugliness.
I tried putting some carbon spacers on the converter. Alu is fine too. Though they have no real purpose, they cover the gap and gave it a somewhat more conventional look.

55Rad's suggestion is good. I do the same and it helps with the aesthetics a bit.
