Paperwork with new bike?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Paperwork with new bike?

Quick question:

Should paperwork always come with a new bike? I got a Serotta recently that was marked down as a last year's model. There's a number on the bottom bracket, but I don't know what Serotta's numbering system is. I didn't get any paperwork. I'll be back in the shop this week...should I ask for it then?

Technically most bicycles will come with a general owner's manual. Believe it or not it is required in most states - legally - in order to complete the sale.

Apart from that you'd be lucky to get anything.

I didn't get any paperwork with my new bike this year either. When I asked about it the guys at the shop said they could dig some up if I wanted it. Last new bike I bought the guys gave me ALL of the paperwork - including the installation manuals for the components, which I kind of liked.

The owner's manuals usually include information on the warranty and how to register your bike for that warranty. If the shop can not provide an owner's manual, check with the manufacturer. They should have copies they can send out. You may also be able to register your new bike on-line through the manufacturer's web site.
